Kumite - Kaeshi Ippon

What is Kaeshi? It means to return or to give back.

As can be seen from the Video, Kagawa Sensei is attacked with a Jodan Oitsuki.
His response is as follows:
1. Step Backwards & Block the attack with Age Uke
2. Quickly perform a Stepping Punch to Jodan target.

The main point of this exercise at our dojo is to promote quick change of direction with good footwork.

It can be used against same attacks from 1 step sparring.

Let's try this exercise in the dojo soon - Ossu

Teens & Adults - A Shifting the Emphasis

Having developed effective Soft blocks to parry & deflect, it was time to challenge ourselves yet again.
This time we looked at Timing, with the non dominant hand playing a greater role in protecting us. Additionally we adopted a Mindset of Blocks being Strikes.
The difference this created was like Chalk & Cheese, with the Defence action of the block having a much higher 'don't mess with me' deterrent factor.

Make your karate 'Natural'

I opened up my computer to discover THIS video. It discusses Soto Uke (outside middle block). The points being made are very close to how we are approaching things. Amazing eh?

The teacher, Richard Amos Sensei 7th dan, is graduate of the Japan Instructor's Course.

At Fuji Dojo we are moving our members, to become more Natural with their karate and to 'trust their technique', plus move in a way that is Healthy & Functional.

It's definitely worth a look. 👍

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Q. How many of these karate terms do you know?

Let's learn the Japanese names for these blocks. But more importantly, how to employ them in our karate practice.
