Hi Bellingen Shire community,

Bellingen Riverwatch, one of the largest citizen science water quality monitoring programs in NSW, and the largest citizen science macoinvertebrate monitoring program in Australia, just received two awards at the River Basin Management Society Awards last night!!

We were a finalist in the 'Involving Community in Waterway Management' category and the winner of the people choice for this category!!

Our people's choice category got 50% more votes than any other category. Go Bello Shire community!!

On behalf of the partnership, thank you to you, our community, for the support you give to this program.

We would like to extend a massive congratulations to the incredible, dedicated Bellingen Riverwatch volunteers.

It is such an honour to be working with you all, together helping to support healthy rivers and to support the recovery of the critically endangered Bellinger River Snapping turtle. 🐢

We couldn't do this important work without the support of our partners.

Do you have an interest in science and the environment, want to meet new people, and learn more about the fascinating waterbugs that live in our rivers?
Macroinvertebrate (or waterbug) testing is detailed work but is also super fun!! If you haven't done it before, it is seriously mind blowing to see the amount of life in one bucket of water from our rivers + The type and number of waterbugs found in a waterway can tell us a lot about how healthy that waterway is.

Bellingen Riverwatch hosts a biannual macroinvertebrate monitoring citizen science program to gain a more holistic understanding of the health of our river, to gain a greater understanding on the diet of the turtle, and to help to evaluate the effectiveness of restorative actions planned.
