THE FULL COBAR EXPERIENCE

REFLECTIONS: A Regional Architecture Association Journey is almost here — join us for an outback architecture experience in Cobar NSW.

THU 17 SEP — Guided bus tour of Cobar’s highlights (Fort Bourke Hill Lookout, Miners Memorial, Mining Heritage Park, the Sound Chapel + more), a communal mural workshop at the Cobar Youth & Community Centre (Youthie), then a community dinner at the historic Great Western Hotel.

FRI 18 SEP — Main speaker day at the Youthie, opening with a Welcome to Country from Aunty Elaine:

* Jonathan Temple (DunnHillam Architecture + Urban Design) — civic work in Cobar
* Paulo Macchia (GANSW – Government Architect NSW) — architect procurement by local government
* Melissa Hollis (NSW Architects Registration Board) — supporting the profession
* Chris Ball (Otetto) — prefab h**p-panel building systems
* Thomas Jager (tommy_jager) — designing with Country
* Closing panel on the day’s themes + the profession’s future

Evening: BBQ dinner + museum exploration at the Great Cobar Museum.

SAT 19 SEP — Site visits led by Jonathan Temple to the Cobar Early Learning Centre and Ward Oval Pavilion, wrapping up at the Mount Grenfell Rock Art Site, a significant Ngiyampaa cultural landscape.

We’re looking forward to hearing from Chris Ball of Otetto (Otetto) at REFLECTIONS in Cobar. Part of the RAA Cobar journey in September will be a visit to the Cobar Sound Chapel, by Glenn Murcutt . We featured this sublime regional odyssey – a listening chamber in the desert – in Issue # 1 of Field, where editor, Peter Salhani, spoke to composer Georges Lentz, instigator of the Chapel, which officially opened in April 2022.

Thanks to everyone who joined RAA’s Field conversation – Natural High – on Friday 31 July in Melbourne, where we gathered at Collingwood Yards, on traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people from the Kulin Nation.

A full house came to hear from our learned panel – architect Anna Maskiell of Public Realm Lab | Architects, architect Alastair Flynn of Woods Bagot and Dr Rachel Goldlust, educator and natural building consultant (Natural Building Australia), moderated by Field editor, Peter Salhani. Thanks also to event partners Architectural Window Systems and Bookshop by Uro and a special thanks to Talina Edwards of Envirotecture, who was unable to appear on the panel due to illness.

Learn more about glass selections and performance for your design and construct projects at RAA’s next online event, hosted by Hamish Kofoed from Viridian Glass Australia.

The session will cover all things glass for both domestic and commercial product selection, including glass types and their properties, glass processes and their impact on application suitability, how glass selection affects functionality in design, and creative uses of glass to enhance aesthetics.

Introducing Thomas Jager (tommy_jager) as a speaker at our upcoming event, REFLECTIONS in Cobar. Thomas was awarded the 2026 NSW Architects Registration Board Architects Medallion for his Master of Architecture thesis, and the inaugural SABE Designing with Country Student Award.

Thomas will present his University of Newcastle final year project, Unsung – Apmere, which explores architecture as an act of repair through Country, language and First Nations knowledge.

Another of our Saturday fringe events at REFLECTIONS in Cobar will be a visit to the Ward Oval Pavilion, also led by Jonathan Temple ().   Here we’ll explore how architecture can strengthen the civic and sporting life of a regional community.
