Bellerive Historical Society

Bellerive Historical Society The society meets first Monday each month except January. Meeting at 1330 even month 1930 odd month.

Our society meets once a month except in January to have a short meeting and then to enjoy a visiting speaker or other activity. Our chief love is the history of Bellerive but our speakers are from many walks of life and they speak on many subjects.Afterwards we chat over a cuppa. We have a fine collection of photos, objects and information about Bellerive and we are hoping, one day, to have a "ho

me" of our own to store this collection. We have an office in Bellerive Community Arts Centre at 17 Cambridge Road, Bellerive.

The Bellerive community is the poorer with the passing of our Patron John Sargent, family man, sportsman, accountant, historian, poet and the author of many (possibly over 30) books about the characters of Bellerive, it's history, hotels and houses.

John was such a big believer in maintaining the history of Kangaroo Point/Bellerive, he developed a private museum where he could showcase to thousands of visitors and school children (especially the school which has a history room named after him - Bellerive Primary School), some knowledge of life on the Derwent River. the O'May ferries and the bridges to future generations.

John's motto which he gave to our Society was "Preserve the Past for the Future" so that through the recording of the past, we hope to learn where we are going.

Of course John was surrounded by Sue and his loving family. Our sincere condolences and best wishes to Sue and the family.
RIP John

A reminder of our delayed meeting (due to Easter) on Monday featuring Phil Tyson and Peter Johnston, who will provide an update on the combined Hobart FM and BHS collarboration radio series presented at 2.30 pm on Saturday's, and repeated at 11.15 am on Tuesdays and 5.15pm on Fridays. Last weeks reading on Joe Lyons was a beauty read by Susan Gardener, secretary of the Lindisfarne Historical Society. If you are not listening in, I encourage you to do so, as the BHS receives fantastic acknowledgement for it's contribution to this project.
Monday's meeting will be at 1.3o pm at the regular venue with a cuppa afterwards. Spread the word and maybe bring a friend.

A reminder to set your dial to 96.1 FM at approx. 2.30 pm today to listen to the first vignette being broadcast. The story read by Peter Johnston is called "The Disappearing School Bell".
If you miss it today the same story will be repeated at about 11-15 am on Tuesday and again at about 5-15 pm on Friday.
The radio station can also be heard at hobartfm.org.au anywhere in the world.
Congratulations to Phil Tyson and the team at Hobart FM as well as the many community members involved in providing and recording the stories.

The QUIZ has been set, the prizes arranged, the venue at Howrah Community Centre, 11 Howrah Road, Howrah has been booked for Monday the 2nd March, the chairs are in place.

Unfortunately the King of Quizmasters is unable to attend but a worthy (maybe) replacement will be found.

The 'Sarge' has set some interesting general knowledge questions with a bit of Bellerive trivia/history thrown in and as I have seen the questions I could be bribed !! Only 28 questions with a little drawing skill required by someone in the group.

All we need now is people to fill the chairs and come along at 7pm next Monday night to have a few laughs. Don't worry about not knowing the answers as you will have five other people in your group.

Put it in your diary - See you there and don't forget to bring a friend.

Exciting times ahead! On Saturday 7 March, at approximately 2.30 pm, Hobart FM Community Radio (96.1) will commence broadcasting 'Tasmanian Voices - Stories Across Time'.

This collaborative presentation by Hobart FM and the BHS, developed over many months by Phil Tyson (BHS and Hobart FM member) and Peter Johnston (Hobart FM), has resulted in over 60 vignettes and story ideas being available, with 28 in the can and ready to roll.

The first vignette, called "The Disappearing School Bell" read by Peter Johnston will be broadcast three times in the first week (Saturday and possibly Tuesday am and Friday pm) so we have twenty eight weeks of work already completed

Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved in this project by providing stories and the many readers, with special thanks to Phil Tyson who has provided a detailed and professional overview on bringing these Tasmanian stories to their final end product suitable for radio.

Further details will be provided once we have the exact dates and times they will be aired.

A very enjoyable day on our Christmas Cruise on the river Derwent aboard the Red and White ferry. The skipper, Peter O'May entertained us with fascinating information about our river.
Everyone enjoyed their lunch with refreshments from the staff of the ferry and the calm waters were a welcome bonus.
Wishing everyone an enjoyable festive season and a Happy and Healthy 2026.
