The Friends of Belair National Park are part of a SA wide 'Friends' network that ranges from the Simpson Desert in the far north to Dingly Dell at the bottom tip of the state. The group seeks to further the basic philosophy of the Park - that it should be regarded primarily as a place preserving the natural environment in which users can see and experience that environment. The objectives of the F

riends of Belair National Park as stated in our constitution are:
To provide voluntary assistance to Belair National Park in close cooperation and liaison with the staff. To raise funds for special projects to benefit Belair National Park and for administration and social activities of the Friends of Belair National Park. To provide cultural and social activities for the enjoyment of Members and the public. To provide support for the protection and preservation of the natural and historic values of Belair National Park. South Australia leads the nation with its Friends of Parks network. At the instigation of the State Government and the Nature Conservation Society, volunteer Friends groups were encouraged from the early 1980s to allow community members to assist in the management of the State's parks and reserves, and to encourage enjoyment of the State's natural and cultural heritage. When an average hourly rate of pay is placed on the work that the Friends carry out each year, an estimated $5-6 million worth of work is performed on behalf of the Parks system each year. This includes all hands on work in the field and anything that is carried out in support of this activity.

We had marvellous weather and ideal conditions for yesterday's monthly guided walk. Led by Pete Raine, 17 people enjoyed the "Two Lookouts" walk along Saddle Hill track off the eponymous road through Blue Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon) and Stringybark (Eucalyptus obliqua) woodland seeing a range of great local native flora, fungi and fauna including a few koalas, a nice patch of tiny Mosquito Orchids (Acianthus pusillus) and much more. We also enjoyed great views of the bushland from the two lookouts and found a great resting log and a cryptic yellow paw print. Hopefully, our July guided walk will be as lucky - hope to see you then for the next one! :-)

Due to the wet conditions there will be no Bush Buddies tomorrow ☔Returning the following week 💚

For yesterday's monthly meeting we had an excellent very informative talk by Felicia Carli, the Coordinator of Open Spaces volunteers from the City of Mitcham. It's amazing what people can do with their verges - including even growing Sturt Desert Peas (Swainsona formosa) in one spectacular example discussed & shown in the second photo here.

Of course, there are stacks of other possibilities depending on the verge and people's desires ranging from Dryland Native Gardens to Formal and Shaded and Bee and butterfly ones and more with plenty of inspiration given in the talk and in the councils Verge Greening Guide which was available on the day and is available online too.

There' also a rebate available for those who green their verges as an incentive and aid for doing so - and doing so does help cool, beautify, make more ecologically and wildlife friendly and generally improve our suburbs as discussed there too. Hopefully a talk that might literally have changed if nor the whole world at least some suburban strips of it here locally in a good meeting enjoyed by all.

It's "Make a Difference Week" and you can be part of it in Belair National Park 💚
