You probably know that koalas LOVE eating eucalyptus leaves (they can munch through as many as 1kg per day) and that they spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping.

But did you know those two traits are directly linked?

Koalas need to sleep so much because it takes up a LOT of energy to process the eucalyptus leaves, which are highly toxic and inedible for most animals.

Last December we announced the birth of four very special joeys that are free of the diseases that threaten the survival of koalas.

The joeys were the first bred through a ground-breaking program led by Koala Life in partnership with Environment SA News.

You can read more about the program here: https://bit.ly/koalalifejoeys

The joeys and their mums are being lovingly cared for at Cleland Wildlife Park by a team of dedicated and passionate keepers - like senior keeper Cassie Riggs.

We spoke to Cassie to find out what a typical day caring for these beautiful little floofballs looks like.

We’re taking a moment to celebrate the extraordinary life, work and contributions of the one and only Dr Jane Goodall, who turns 90 today!

People around the world are celebrating Dr Goodall’s birthday with the hashtag and the Jane Goodall Institute Australia is asking people around the world to mark this special day by performing random acts of kindness – big or small.

Dr Goodall is a world-famous primatologist who for most of her life has been a champion for nature, the environment and people.

She was a ground-breaking researcher into chimpanzee behaviour and in the 1950's discovered that chimpanzees were making and using tools and were capable of feeling and expressing emotions, much like us.

She is also a world-famous conservationist and a lover of trees, forest and koalas!

Koala Life Director Dr Chris West has been lucky enough to meet and with Dr Goodall over many years and introduced her to her first wild koala, nearly 20 years ago in the Adelaide Hills.

Dr Goodall will be back in Australia in May and June, her first visit in five years, as part of her ‘Reasons for Hope’ tour. She will be appearing in Adelaide at the Town Hall on Friday 31 May.

Happy International Day of Happiness! 😃

International Day of Happiness was proclaimed by the United Nations in 2012 to recognise the importance happiness and general well-being plays in the lives of all people around the world.

For many people, connecting with animals, whether domesticated or in the wild, is an endless source of joy, and if you’re lucky like us, you get to work with cute, fuzzy animals as part of your work!

Koala Life is a not-for-profit foundation, dedicated to raising awareness of koala conservation, raising funds for critical research and finding solutions for koala diseases.

And it makes us happy to know our work is making a difference to the well-being and future survival of this iconic species.

What fills your heart when it comes to koalas? 🐨❤️

It’s World Sleep Day, and if anyone knows a thing or two about catching some ZZZs, it’s our koala friends.

When they’re not eating, these cuddly creatures can snooze up to 20 hours a day!!!

Talking about living the dream.

But let's not forget our koala mates have an essential role in forest conservation.

By selectively munching on certain eucalyptus leaves, they help promote biodiversity and a healthy ecosystem.

And that’s nothing to snooze at!

So, take a cue from our koala friends this World Sleep Day and treat yourself to a well-deserved nap in honour of our sleepy ambassadors of conservation.
