🌱🌲Our Vision of a Grow the Future NURSERY in Bega!🌲🌱

We’ve been working away at what we hope will be the next chapter of Grow the Future’s journey: A nursery run by Grow the Future, that provides a vibrant and welcoming space in which our community can connect and work towards a circular future, while providing employment opportunities and pathways for young people in our community.

🌏Bega is by far the largest town in our region and central business hub but it no longer has an existing nursery. This is a huge gap for a community that is building towards a circular future, in which plants and growing food will be essential. At the same time, the majority of our local vegetable and herb growers, including us at Grow the Future are unable to access local seeding and are having to get these trucked into our community. We want to employ young people to produce these resources right here in the Bega Valley.

We’ve been working hard to make this happen, have brought funding into our region to do so, and have a crew of young people who are excited to step up to the task. The final piece of the puzzle we need to solve is securing an appropriate site in Bega for the set up! We have explored some obvious options around Bega. However, none of these options have landed. But we are confident that if we keep working at it, we will get there! 🧩

In the meantime, we will be hustling in every way that we can. We have set-up some ramshackle infrastructure on one of our current sites to begin propagating seedlings and plants, we’ve been building our team’s capacity to get ready to dive into this, and a couple of our young people have been working extra hours to start to build up nursery stock. We will have seedlings to sell to our community very soon, so stay tuned!

Planting a seed, caring for the plant, and watching it grow, is literally bringing something to life that wouldn’t have existed without you. For the young people we work with, this experience can really provide a solid foundation for the empowerment to take place. The Grow the Future Nursery will open-up a new chapter in this work, and we can’t wait to make it happen!🚀

Jimmy grew up on a farm in Moruya, and he always thought that one day, he'd end up back there. But he took the long way around to get there. After studying an arts degree at uni, he spent years travelling the world, chasing surf and adventure.

Even then, he felt that farming was in his blood. So when he found himself working on farms again, it felt natural but the amount of chemical spraying he was doing every day didn’t sit right.

He started dreaming about how he would run his own farm. He read everything he could about regenerative agriculture, organics, permaculture, and biodynamics, building a vision of something different.

Fast forward to 2025: Jimmy runs Grassboots, a small-scale regenerative farm with a goal of putting healthy and productive food on local tables.

It hasn't always been easy, in the first season he lost a lot of garlic to fungal issues and the risks of the weather and pests are always there in the back of his mind. But day to day, it's worth it. The small things like doing an evening crop walk, spotting healthy growth, and seeing soil health improve (even when it's slow progress) confirms Jimmy's decision was the right one.

Jimmy also encourages others to take the leap into small-scale farming.

“Do it! We need more small-scale growers feeding local communities. It’s rewarding work and a great lifestyle, even though it takes grit to ride the ups and downs.

Learn from other growers, be prepared to fail, and remember every farm has its own challenges. The best way is to jump in and give it a crack.”
