VollieCare

VollieCare Volunteers Supporting the Southern Health Community At VollieCare (formerly known as Volunteer Service for the Flinders Medical Centre Inc.)

we are dedicated to providing patients, visitors and staff in the Southern Health Community with a professional service. We are a self-funded, not-for-profit organisation whose volunteers carry out many valuable services across Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Hospital, and the Repat Health Precinct. The service also supports Spiritual Care, Arts In Health, the Repat Museum, Veterans Wellbeing C

entre and the Jamie Larcombe Centre. The proceeds raised, help to improve facilities, patient care, as well as support medical research and our Consumer Care Projects which we do through financial donations. Without Volunteer Support, we would not be able to do what we do. Through volunteering, we can offer pathways to employment and add value to your resume. You will learn and develop skills such as time management, teamwork, communication, and leadership, but most importantly, you will have fun. It is acknowledged that the strong partnership between staff and volunteers adds warmth to the hospital culture and provides an extra dimension in patient care. When you volunteer, you are making a commitment to share that most precious of resources – your time – to make life better for those in need. Volunteers work in patient services and in retail areas. Wherever they work, our volunteers are getting involved, be active and having a voice in their community.

Meet Frans (left) and Phil (right) – Our Volunteer Musicians, Double Dutch

Frans and Phil make up Double Dutch, one of our wonderful volunteer music teams who bring live music and connection to patients, families, and staff across the Repat Health Precinct.

Frans says:
“My volunteer role is about sharing my love of music with patients, their families, and staff — hopefully bringing a little cheer and happiness into their day.

Phil and I try to play music from an era that many of our patients can relate to — a bit of a trip down memory lane, so to speak.

What I enjoy most about volunteering is seeing the smiles on patients’ faces. That makes it all worthwhile.”

Phil says:
“My connection to volunteering comes from my own experience as a hospital patient during my battle with cancer.

I underwent 25 sessions of intensive radiation treatment to my face and spent a lot of time waiting alongside other patients before and after treatment. During those waits, two ladies and one gentleman — known as the Lavender Ladies and Lavender Lad — would come around with a trolley carrying what I can only describe as ‘heavenly’ soup.

Those volunteers made a huge impact on me and inspired me to give back through volunteering.

At the end of many of our performances now, patients and their wives, husbands, carers, and family members often come over to thank us and tell us how much they appreciated and enjoyed the music. Knowing we’ve helped brighten someone’s day is incredibly rewarding.”

Thank you, Frans and Phil, for sharing your talents and creating moments of connection, comfort, and joy throughout our hospitals.

It’s National Volunteer Week!

Our special shout out goes to the incredible volunteers at VollieCare – they give their time, energy, compassion, and heart so generously to support patients, families, and staff across SALHN.

VollieCare Volunteers provide many important patient care services, such as the guide service, across a range of different areas.

Did you know they collectively contribute around 40,000 hours of volunteer services each year? We are truly grateful.

In the Tobruk and Kokoda wards in Flinders Medical Centre’s Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Palliative Care division, some of our wonderful volunteers, including former stroke patients, help our community by sharing their experiences.

They spoke with more than 700 Rehabilitation patients in and their families last year, and the difference they make is clear in the feedback we receive.

“I will never forget when I met the volunteer. I was feeling down. The volunteer gave me the hope that it wouldn’t always be like this. That I could get on with my life again.”

“I didn’t realise how anxious and lonely I was. It helped both my wife and me to see the volunteers.”

Some of wonderful team responsible for making this possible are pictured below including Matthew, Bob, Karyn, Diana (RAP Patient & Family Representative), Phil, Rob, and Phil.

Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers at SALHN for everything you do.

Meet Ted and Poppy, one of our many Pet Therapy Volunteers

Therapy Pet visiting has been, without a doubt, the most enjoyable volunteer work I’ve been involved in.

Poppy is clearly the star of the show—I’m just the person holding the lead—but the joy she brings to others is truly priceless. While our focus is always on the patients and their families, the positive response from nursing and medical staff is just as rewarding.

Since I joined VollieCare, every shift has brought at least two or more special and memorable moments with patients, continually reinforcing the value and purpose of what we do.
