Lost your fertiliser? 🌱 It's now a hazard to the environment!

While travelling along Corfield Street in Gosnells, I came across a 4.5 kg bucket of Osmocote fertiliser that had spilled across the road at the Fremantle Road roundabout. If you happen to be missing a bucket, it may be yours!

As coordinator of the Phosphorus Awareness Project, I tend to look at stormwater drains a little differently. Deciduous leaves, grass clippings, soil and fertiliser on our roads aren’t just mess — they’re potential pollutants. Once washed into stormwater drains, they can end up in our rivers and wetlands, contributing nutrients that fuel algal blooms.

Algal blooms can be toxic, smelly and unsightly, but for the plants and animals living in our waterways, they can be deadly. They block sunlight from reaching aquatic plants, and when the algae die and decompose, the process can deplete dissolved oxygen in the water, suffocating aquatic life.

We removed the container and the approximately 1 kg of fertiliser that remained inside, and alerted our friends at the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group. They’ve assured us that a City of Gosnells crew will clean up the remaining fertiliser before it has a chance to wash into the Southern River, just 50 metres away. 💚

Although I’m sure this was an accidental loss, it’s a timely reminder to secure your loads and be mindful of what you’re allowing to go down the drain. A little care on the road can make a big difference to the health of our waterways.

🌱 Connecting students with nature!

Each year, SERCUL’s Phosphorus Awareness Project donates native plants to schools, helping students learn about the important role plants play in creating healthy ecosystems and connecting them to the unique flora of Perth 🐦🦋🌿

Native plants help clean our water, purify the air, maintain healthy soils, regulate our climate, and provide food and resources for people and wildlife. Noongar people have used local native plants for food, medicine and building materials for thousands of years!

Local native plants are adapted to our conditions and require little or no additional fertiliser. This means fewer nutrients can leach into groundwater and flow into our wetlands and rivers, where they can contribute to algal blooms.

🌿 Plant local. Protect our waterways. Connect with nature...just like the students from St Emilie's Catholic Primary School did last term!

This waste remover is one of the good ones! Dont dump rubbish in bushland, drains or waterways. In fact dont dump rubbish anywhere except in the right bin!!

A rubbish removalist has been left furious after discovering a pile of garbage dumped beside a stormwater pipe flowing directly into a wildlife-filled creek.
