🐢Booragoon Lake Planting Day🐢

For those of you who showed up to the last Booragoon Planting Day you would know we moved to Blue Gum Lake instead. This time we really will be planting in the dryland section of Booragoon Lake! This community planting day will take place on the 10th of June from 9am to 12pm. Please come along and bring as many friends and family as possible to help increase the habitat along the lake edges.

Please see the second slide as we have many more volunteering opportunities coming up during this busy season including a wetland planting at Harrisdale Swamp on the 24th of June. Additionally, SERCUL will also be introducing weekly Thursday Landcare events over the winter period! Look out for more information to follow!

For this event please meet near the boardwalk along the north side of Alderige rd.

🐦‍⬛🌱Murdoch Wagtail Planting🌱🐦‍⬛

Thank you to the volunteers who came along to revegetate a neglected section of bushland at Murdoch. The degraded soil and open nature of this site have proven a challenge in the past, however, this year we have done a denser planting and chosen hardy variety's that will hopefully do better at this harsh site. The wonderful volunteers managed to plant 1116 seedlings in a relatively short time.

🐦‍⬛🌱Murdoch Banksia Woodland Planting 🌱🐦‍⬛

SERCUL would like to thank the Volunteers and the Murdoch Sustainability Staff that came along to help us revegetate a section of remnant Banksia woodland located on the edge of Murdoch University. This beautiful section of woodland had an additional 570 seedlings planted in a short amount of time. It was a tough day with many w**ds to tackle while planting but the crew did a wonderful job! We will be returning to this section to try fit in an additional 250 plants on the 23rd of June.

🌱Paganoni Swamp Planting Day🌱

Thank you to the Friends of Paganoni Swamp and DBCA for your brilliant efforts in planting 493 seedlings within the reserve on the 25th of May. This was a lovely community driven event with many volunteers and smiling faces throughout the whole event. We hope your next event on the 8th of June is just as successful.

🚨 Environmental Vandalism Alert — Canning River 🚨

On 26 May 2026, a member of the public was witnessed throwing containers of aquatic w**d into the Canning River from Nicholson Rd Bridge. A quick-thinking kayaker retrieved one container and handed it to nearby DBCA officers, who also located and removed a second floating container — an environmental disaster narrowly avoided.

The w**d was Salvinia (Salvinia molesta) — a W**d of National Significance and Declared Pest in WA. It is illegal to possess, transport or release Salvinia without a permit. Left unchecked, it forms dense mats that smother aquatic ecosystems.

🌿 See Salvinia in the Canning River?

Contact SERCUL immediately — we will respond, remove, and destroy any material, and report to DPIRD via MyPestGuide.

🚔 Witnessed environmental vandalism?

SERCUL received a Community Grant from the City of Gosnells to support an upgrade of the gardens surrounding the homestead that serves as our office. So far this has involved the installation of a new reticulation system, removal/pruning of some plants, application of mulch and purchase and installation of new plants.

We couldnt have done this without help from our fantastic volunteers, including Fiona, Lilli, Doug and the Department of Justice crew, and the hard work of some of our Environmental Services Team and office staff, including our Chief Financial Officer Greg, Graphic Designer Mel and Education Manager Natasha.

The transformation is starting to take place! A few more changes will come over the next couple of months, so watch this space!

SERCUL would like to thank Saltire Training Group for their delivery of an informative and hands on 4WD training day. Our Environmental Service Team leaders and supervisors were sent out to complete this course to better prepare our staff for the challenges of working within bushland setting. The Saltire Training Group did a wonderful job at teaching our staff how to drive on various terrain and how to self-recover a vehicle using various methods. Our crew is now more confident and better prepared for any challenges that may arise.

🌱Samson Park Planting Day🌱

Samson Park's annual community planting day was held last Sunday the 17th of May and was a great success. 60 amazing volunteers showed up to help plant and water 1500 tube stock! This was the first time the group used TerraCottem to help improve soil health and enhance plant growth. We look forward to seeing the results in the coming months. 🌿
