On 14 February 2026, National Servicemen’s Day, the Government will hold a National Commemorative Service in Canberra to mark 75 years since the inception of the 1951 National Service scheme.
The service will be held in the Great Hall at the Australian Parliament House in Canberra starting at 10:30 am.
More than 280,000 Australians were conscripted into Australia’s armed services through National Service schemes between 1951 and 1972. The schemes were a product of significant global and regional conflicts facing Australia following the Second World War.
Sadly, some 250 Australians lost their lives during this time of national service.
National service was compulsory for most of the young men who served, and this National Commemorative Service is an important opportunity for all Australians to come together to recognise the service and sacrifice of all Australia’s ‘Nashos’.
We owe them a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid.
I encourage anyone interested in attending the National Commemorative Service in Canberra to register their attendance for free via the DVA website.
The service will be broadcast nationally on the ABC and available to watch on ABC iView.
Australians can also honour our Nashos by sharing a personal reflection on DVA’s Wall of Remembrance.

RSL has nearly 600 trained volunteer compensation and wellbeing advocates spread across the country who can help guide you through the claims process.

An RSL Advocate can assist you to get the best possible result for your circumstances, getting you the recognition and respect for your contribution that you made during your service.

Our assistance is free and can often be done in person or online/over the phone.

RSL supports veterans being able to choose their advocate – be it paid or for free - but is extremely concerned that the lack of regulation, quality assurance and oversight has led to a rise in unethical, unscrupulous, profit-driven companies thriving in the sector, taking advantage of veterans at a very vulnerable point in their lives.

We cannot accept this.

The government and the ESO community need to shine a very bright light on the behaviour of these unscrupulous agents, and we welcome the changes announced by Hon. Matt Keogh MP to protect veterans and their families against fee-for-service advocates that strip a percentage of compensation money away from them.

The Beaudesert RSL Sub Branch prides itself on serving veterans of all eras and always welcome younger veterans. We always welcome new ideas that can better meet the needs of all veterans.

"We must bridge the generational divide. Too many younger veterans have seen the RSL as irrelevant to their needs. We need to earn their trust through action, not rhetoric. This means addressing contemporary issues: transition support, employment pathways, mental health services, research that provides evidence-based services and support, and cutting through bureaucratic barriers that drive veterans to despair.”

Yesterday, RSL Victoria representatives, Eamon Hale and Marianne Doyle, visited the new Anzac Station ahead of the official opening of the Metro Tunnel this Sunday 30.

Anzac Station exists as an enduring reminder to all commuters of all who have served and continue to serve today.
