On Wednesday night members of Beaudesert Youth & Community Centre -YACC attended the Scenic Rim Candlelight Vigil Domestic and Family Violence Remembrance Day event at Jubilee Park, Beaudesert.

The event was held on partnership with YFS, Zonta Club of Beaudesert Area Inc. Scenic Rim Regional Council, Mununjali Elders and Queensland Police Service. We were all given a fresh rose (minus the thorns) and a candle.

There was a great show of support with representatives from local non-profit organisations and community members in attendance.

Sarah from YFS spoke about the hope that one day there will be no domestic and family violence, with the key to solving this problem being education and support services.

Mununjali Elder Aunty Geraldine Page gave a welcome to country a mentioned how domestic and family violence had touched her life. SRRC Councillors Kerri Cryer and Jennifer Sanders were there also, with Kerri speaking on behalf of council.

Beaudesert Police Sergeant Ken Murray talked about the terrible statistic of 80% of police call outs is now for domestic/family violence, which puts pressure on police services.

Justine from Zonta Club of Beaudesert Area Inc read out a poem, which was centred around domestic/family violence.

The night ended with the names of people who have lost their lives to domestic/family violence in the area over the past 12 months.

We then all placed our roses and candles on a memorial table.

πŸ’œ Thank you to all organisers of the Candlelight Vigil.
