With a bit of time to spare this afternoon (and a lot of internet access!), the BOAC team did a little digging about all the “vote for me” signs popping up around town.

For those wondering too — here’s what’s going on:

The Tasmanian Legislative Council (Upper House) is holding elections for the divisions of Huon and Rosevears… and yes, Rosevears covers the West Tamar. (The map sourced from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission is included here.)

Voting is compulsory if you’re enrolled in this area.

Polling day: Saturday 2 May 2026

How to vote
You’ve got a few options:
• Early voting centres (Launceston and surrounding areas)
• Mobile polling visits some local communities (including Beaconsfield and Beauty Point at set times)
• Election day booths will be available across the West Tamar — just turn up between 8am–6pm

If you’re unsure where to go, you can check the Tasmanian Electoral Commission website https://www.tec.tas.gov.au/ or drop into BOAC and we’ll help you find the closest option).

Candidates for Rosevears:
• Ben McKinnon (Teacher) – Australian Labor Party
• Charlene McLennan (Solicitor) – Tasmanian Greens
• Susan Monson (Business Manager) – Independent
• Jo Palmer (Member of Parliament) – Liberal Party

So... our lovely community...
If you live in the West Tamar region and are enrolled to vote — it’s time to do a bit of research and make your choice.

And if you’d like help looking into the candidates or understanding how voting works, you’re always welcome to use the BOAC computers — and our friendly helpers are here to assist

There are lots of ways you can use the internet to save money: concessions and rebates offered by the government; comparing petrol prices, comparing internet and mobile phone plans; comparison websites that compare technical specifications and include peoples reviews; you can even use your smart phone's notes to make a shopping list that is easy to take with you, and you can use your phones calculator to add up your shop as you go.

The government website moneysmart.gov.au has lots of information about managing money and getting support if you are struggling. Call in if you need help with the webpage or trying any of these tips. We love people visiting our centre.

have you heard about the medicare phishing scams?

Scammers are pretending to be from Medicare.

They may contact you by text message or email and say:

you have an unclaimed payment or rebate
your Medicare service has been frozen, stopped or suspended
your Medicare account needs to be updated
your Medicare card has expired
your Medicare insurance information is missing.
They’ll ask you to click on a link and update your details.

DON'T! Come into the online centre for more information here https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/medicare-phishing-scams?context=60271

Thanks to the person that brought this to our attention.

Scammers are pretending to be from Medicare.

Thank you to Rio Tinto for supporting our volunteer training program through this generous grant.

The funding will enable our volunteers to undertake First Aid training, strengthening our ability to support the West Tamar community.

Today's morning tea was an heartening showcase of community organisations and contributions made through volunteer service. It also highlighted how targeted grant funding can significantly enhance community capacity and safety.

We appreciate the engagement of Rio Tinto staff, who expressed how they feel more involved in the community by seeing their organisation supporting local volunteer initiatives and making a positive difference at the community level.
