A splash of gold at Evans Reserve

One of the true highlights of winter is seeing our native Acacias (Wattles) burst into flower.

Their brilliant golden blooms don’t just brighten the reserve—they play an important role in supporting local biodiversity, providing a valuable source of pollen and nectar for native bees and other insects at a time when many other plants are still waiting to flower.

These colourful displays are a reminder that every season has something special to offer in our local bushland.

The seasons are changing at Evans Reserve.

As winter begins to make way for spring, the reserve is quietly preparing for another spectacular display of native wildflowers.

These may look like simple buds today, but over the coming weeks they’ll burst into bloom, providing an important source of food for our native bees, birds and other pollinators.

One of the many joys of spending time in our local bushland is noticing these small seasonal changes. Every visit reveals something new, reminding us that nature is always at work.

If you haven’t visited Evans Reserve lately, now is the perfect time to take a walk, slow down and see what you can discover. Spring is just around the corner.

What an incredible morning at Evans Reserve!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual community planting day.

Together, our amazing volunteers planted more than 400 native plants, helping to restore local habitat, improve biodiversity and create a healthier future for Evans Reserve.

It was fantastic to see members of our community, families, volunteers and the local City of Bayswater Councillors who rolled up their sleeves and got involved.

A special thank you to the City of Bayswater for providing the plants and continuing to support from Cr Cale Black - City of Bayswater, West Ward for the restoration of Evans Reserve.

Thank you to everyone who attended, we look forward to seeing you at our next community event!

🌱 Join Us for Evans Reserve’s Annual Planting Day! 🌱

This Saturday 4th July from 9:00am, we’re coming together to make a lasting difference at Evans Reserve.

With over 400 native plants ready to go into the ground, this is one of our biggest community planting days yet. Every plant helps improve habitat for local wildlife, strengthens our natural environment, and ensures Evans Reserve continues to thrive for future generations.

Whether you’re a regular volunteer or it’s your first time joining us, everyone is welcome. Bring your family, friends and a pair of gloves, and spend the morning giving back to our local community.

🌿 What to Bring: Gloves, enclosed shoes, a hat, water bottle and your community spirit!

Djeran, the Noongar season marked by the colour green, signals the arrival of cooler weather and relief from the summer heat. Crisp nights and dewy mornings are key signs that the season is shifting.

As Djeran settles in, winds become lighter and often drift from the south, carrying swarms of flying ants through the air. The landscape also begins to change, with vibrant red blooms appearing on flowering gums (Corymbia ficifolia) and the delicate summer flame (Beaufortia aestiva).

Across the Perth region, you may notice the rusty hues and seed cones developing on sheoaks (Allocasuarina fraseriana), while banksias come into flower, providing vital nectar for birds and small mammals.

Traditionally, this season was a time for harvesting and preparing foods such as treated zamia seeds, along with freshwater fish, frogs, turtles, and the root bulbs of the yanget (bulrush).
