People’s Victory: Mary Jane Veloso Will Walk Free

BAYAN International joins Mary Jane Veloso, her family, and millions of overseas migrant workers, advocates, and solidarity friends in celebrating Mary Jane’s pardon and imminent release. The over decade-long people’s campaign built around the steadfastness of Mary Jane and her family proves that collective and organized mass action can move mountains.

Unjustly arrested and sentenced to death in Indonesia in 2010 on charges of drug trafficking, Mary Jane was in reality a victim of human trafficking by illegal recruiters. It was the people’s movement, led by her family together with Migrante International, progressive lawyers, migrant advocates, interfaith leaders, and even Indonesian allies that ultimately forced the Aquino government to take action. It was this same mass movement that organized, rallied, and campaigned tirelessly for her release over the past decade, and eventually for her unconditional pardon once she was transferred back to the Philippines—another people’s victory in and of itself.

We will not allow politicians to parade this victory for their own personal gain and cover up the critical role the mass movement played. We will never forget the deafness of the Aquino, Duterte, and Marcos administrations alike, who only took action when it was politically untenable for them not to. We must remember that despite having authority to pardon Mary Jane immediately upon her return to the Philippines in December 2024, the Marcos administration kept her in prison and separated from her loved ones for almost 2 years.

There are hundreds of thousands of more Mary Janes around the world—victims and survivors of the Philippine government’s inhumane policy of labor export that treats overseas workers as commodities and milking cows, and abandons them once in distress. With this latest victory, we are inspired to organize even harder to end forced migration and the the rotten social system that causes it.

BAYAN Australia country chairperson, Alexia Fuentes, also highlighted how we must oppose the US-backed Pax Silica initiative which would open up the Philippines to further imperialist plunder and drag the country into US-led regional conflicts, with Filipinos as cannon fodder for the US imperialist warmachine. She also stressed how the rotten, puppet, and corrupt US-Marcos Jr regime must be held ultimately accountable, and that only through our collective militant action can the Filipino people attain genuine change and advance the national democratic struggle. # #

ML@54 anti-corruption rally in Melbourne led by BAYAN Australia

Today, various progressive mass organisations peacefully gathered at the State Library steps to demand accountability for the massive corruption in the Philippines as well as to denounce the US-backed Pax Silica initiative that is being pushed at the behest of Washington to advance US imperialist interests in the region. The protesters then successfully marched to the Philippine Consulate General in Collins street despite being met with Victoria Police attempting to block the march along Swanston street.

The demonstration today also coincided with the 54th anniversary of the martial law declaration in the Philippines under the Marcos Sr. dictatorship.
