In the Huon Valley Diversity Matters !

An exciting new program called Diversity Matters Everyone Matters is being rolled out in primary schools in the Huon Valley and the Just One…program is being delivered at Huonville High School. Both programs are being delivered by the team at A Fairer World and are centred around lived experience storytelling to experience the direct impacts of exclusion and discrimination.

Students will spend Term 2 learning about how stereotyping people can cause harm and can lead to discrimination. Students will also have the opportunity to learn new skills and practise ways to be more inclusive. This could be as simple as respecting the diversity amongst them and smiling and saying hello to someone who seems different to them.

Jodie Epper Educational Leader from A Fairer World is “Very pleased to have the opportunity to work with both primary school and high school students and teachers. Changing school culture to be more accepting of diversity is a complex process and we are very excited to be working across both schools, with students, parents and teachers”

Celebration Events that showcase student work learnt across the two programs will be
• Huonville Primary School Celebration Event Wednesday 17th June
• Huonville High School Celebration Event Tuesday 7th July

The Diversity Matters Everyone Matters program is funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund and the Just One…program is funded by the Department for Education, Children and Young People

Every year we celebrate the heart and soul of our work, our lived experience speakers - known to many as human ‘books’. The Hobart human library is at the core of everything diversity and inclusion that A Fairer World does. We celebrate the ‘books’ by acknowledging the work they have done, and highlight the lasting impact of their openness, resilience, and vulnerability. Their stories inspire change, they ask us to gently reflect on our ways, how we move through the world, how we treat each other, they ask us where our biases lay, and our ingrained assumptions lie.

This year we were fortunate to double bill our celebrations. Recently at the St Lukes wellbeing hub we had the pleasure of hosting a screening of Paul Pritchard’s documentary Larapinta: End to End. Paul is one of the Hobart human libraries most established ‘books’. His documentary shows participants walking the trail, as decision-makers who were actively choosing challenge, discomfort, and uncertainty. By showing these moments honestly the film shows that people with disabilities are capable because they are allowed to struggle, not because they are superhuman. The film challenges the idea that safety always means staying within narrow pre-approved boundaries. It shows how low expectations - not disability – are often the real limiting factor.

Sally, an audience member said post screening, ‘Paul and his companions made great achievements, in their walk. The support crew were amazing and did a wonderful job.
Being Tasmanian, I do recall Paul's accident with the Totem pole, in the media some years ago. Then what he had achieved after that. I really enjoyed the Larapinta Documentary, scenery was magnificent and very colourful and for those involved, what a wonderful experience to share’.

It was our pleasure to present our Hobart human library session with Hobart College in March.

Thank you to Hobart College the opportunity for A Fairer World to be part of the Harmony Day Assembly – Everyone Belongs.

Harmony Day is a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Our Human Books, Mem and David enjoyed sharing their stories along with A Fairer World Trainer Zelah who facilitated the workshop, the students had Q&A time and were very engaged, enthusiastic, and eager to listen.

We are all diverse and different but to make everyone feel like they belong is important to make them feel included.

This program was funded by the Department for Education, Children and Young People.

In the Derwent Valley Diversity Matters!

An exciting new program funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund called Diversity Matters Everyone Matters is being rolled out in Department for Education, Children and Young People schools in the Derwent Valley.

It is being delivered by the team at A Fairer World.

Molesworth Primary and Glenora District School have recently completed the 4-week program and Westerway Primary School is looking forward to the program starting soon.

Students from both schools have been learning about how stereotyping people can cause harm and can lead to discrimination. They have also been practising ways to be more inclusive. This could be as simple as respecting the diversity amongst them and smiling and saying hello to someone who seems different to them.

“It is important to include people so that people don’t hide their true identity” Student Glenora District School
“Ask someone if they are ok and let them join in – it doesn’t matter if they are different” Student Molesworth Primary school.

Jodie Epper Educational Leader from A Fairer World is “very pleased about the conversations that are happening in the program” and is “thrilled at the work the students are completing”

Both schools have completed hard copy books and eBooks.

Glenora District School will have their celebration event on Tuesday 14th April and Westerway Primary School commences the program Monday 27th July.

We recently delivered our Diversity Matters, Everyone Matters program at Molesworth Primary School, ending in a fantastic celebration event with damper around a fire. The program supports students to build empathy and understanding, while boosting their confidence and literacy skills.

Through storytelling, creative writing, & drawing, students explored and celebrated diversity in meaningful, practical ways. Their work has made a real impact, with their stories brought together into a book that shows their understanding of inclusion and reflects the values of their rural community.

This program was proudly funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund.

On Friday 20 March at Parliament Lawns in Hobart, A Fairer World joined forces with the City of Hobart to show our support for the International Day of Eliminating Racism and Discrimination.

A Fairer World held a stall which was joined by David one of our amazing human books and Zelah one of our members of staff. We were thankful for the opportunity as members of the public engaged in meaningful conversations of the impact that racism and discrimination had on them.

Through the work we do at A Fairer World, we hope that future collaborations can be made to help make a change in raising awareness and committing to a future free from racial discrimination.

Thank you to the City of Hobart for hosting this important event in our community which builds initiative of collaboration amongst us all to make a difference to combat racism.

We had a heartfelt day with Sorell Council. Thanks. Lots of great conversation and food for thought. Here’s some of our thinking/ideas put to text.

INCLUSION: The Hobart Human Library once heard….

you can no longer unsee
growth is lonely before it becomes empowering
you’re allowed to put the heaviness down
protect the part of you that believes in people

Every time you teach, explain, hold space, model inclusion, or speak truth… someone’s worldview shifts, even slightly…Change often feels invisible until it suddenly isn’t.

How to stay grounded and connected while holding the awareness of inclusion:
(OR ways to stay whole while walking through a world that isn’t always paying attention).

Replace “Why don’t they see it?” with “How can I stay centred while they learn?”
People are at different stages of awareness.
Some are just starting.
Some will never be ready.
Your role is not to carry everyone — it's to walk steadily so others have a path to follow.

Let gratitude sit beside anger — not replace it
You do not need to stop being upset with injustice in order to feel gratitude.
Both truths can live in you:
• I am heartbroken by inequity
• I am grateful for the beauty of community
That duality is emotional intelligence in action.

A reflection you might find grounding
Most people don’t notice the cracks in a system until someone with your kind of heart points them out simply by being awake.
Keep your love.
Keep your empathy.
Keep your gratitude.
They are not naïve — they are your strength.
And the world desperately needs people who can see clearly and remain kind.
