Congratulations to Abby Norton on completing her School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) in Business through the UGL SBAT program.

Abby completed her traineeship with REDI.E in Dubbo, gaining valuable workplace experience while working towards a nationally recognised qualification. Pictured with Abby are Peter Gibbs, CEO of REDI.E for Dubbo and surrounding areas, and Simon Quinn, UGL Depot Maintenance Manager in Dubbo.

Abby's achievement highlights the power of partnership. By working together, UGL, Skillset and local host employers such as REDI.E and Dubbo City Toyota are creating real career pathways for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. UGL provides the opportunity, Skillset supports the training and employment journey, and host employers offer hands-on workplace experience, giving students the chance to build confidence, gain industry skills and take their first steps towards a rewarding career.

We were proud to support Skillset Senior College Bathurst campus students as they prepare for life beyond the classroom. Through the delivery of a Work Ready Workshop by Holly Clarke (Manager - Career Development) at our Head Office, students had the opportunity to build practical job-seeking skills, boost their confidence and gain valuable insights into what employers are looking for. It's fantastic to see them taking positive steps towards their future careers.

From the classroom to the butcher's block! 🥩👏

We love helping create life-changing opportunities for young people across regional NSW.

One of those opportunities is supporting Hayden Dench from Lightning Ridge Central School as he throws himself into his School-Based Apprenticeship in Butchery with Khan's IGA Plus Liquor Lightning Ridge.

Through our partnership with the NSW Department of Education's Back in the Game program, we were able to help Hayden access the equipment he needed to get started, while working closely with Hayden, his school and employer to turn this opportunity into a reality.

A big thank you to Khan's IGA for investing in local talent and to Lightning Ridge Central School for supporting students to explore career pathways while still at school.

We're excited to see where Hayden's apprenticeship journey takes him! 🌟

I 2026 Gordon Hawkes Apprentice of the Year

Congratulations to James Davidson!

James began his mature-aged carpentry apprenticeship with B. Moore Constructions in 2024 and has quickly become a trusted member of the team. Now in his third year, James is known for arriving prepared, taking initiative and approaching each job with focus, reliability and a strong understanding of workplace safety.

Feedback from B. Moore Constructions and TAFE consistently highlights the quality of James’ work, his contribution to the team and the progress he has made against his Training Plan. Alongside his Certificate III, James has enrolled in a Certificate IV qualification, allowing him to further his knowledge while continuing to develop his practical carpentry skills.

James has also balanced his apprenticeship and studies with major personal milestones, including getting married and welcoming a baby. Thank you to Brett Moore and the B. Moore Constructions team for supporting James throughout his apprenticeship.

Congratulations, James. Your professional approach, high-quality work and interest in continuing your education make you a deserving recipient of Skillset’s highest apprentice honour! 👏

I 2026 Women in Trades Apprentice of the Year

Congratulations to Amy Shephard!

After more than a decade working as a chef, Amy swapped the kitchen for the workshop to begin a welding and fabrication apprenticeship with WF Industries in Dubbo.

Growing up on a farm sparked Amy’s interest in machinery, materials and how things work. Her apprenticeship has given Amy the opportunity to turn that interest into practical trade skills.

Amy has worked on projects across mine sites, quarries, pet food factories and cottonseed processing facilities throughout NSW. Her experience now ranges from repairs through to major structural upgrades, completion and installation.

Her plans do not stop with completing her trade. Amy hopes to study drafting and eventually move into teaching, where she can share her knowledge with the next generation of tradies.

Amy is also involved in Together We RISE, a National Apprentice Employment Network program connecting and supporting women in trades.

Thank you to Wayne and Kerissa Whiteman and the WF Industries team for supporting Amy throughout her apprenticeship.

Congratulations, Amy. Your career change shows that there is more than one pathway into a trade and no single starting point for building a successful career!

I 2026 First Nations Trainee of the Year

🐾 Congratulations to Madison Honeysett!

Madison completed her Certificate III in Animal Care Services within 12 months while working at Bathurst Regional Council Animal Rehoming Centre.

At the centre, Madison became known for the care and energy she brings to animals awaiting adoption, as well as her ability to help potential adopters understand each animal’s personality and individual needs.

Very few adoption appointments led by Madison end without an animal finding a home.

One particularly memorable example involved a dog that had been at the centre for well over a year. By helping potential adopters understand the dog and what it needed from a home, Madison helped achieve a positive adoption outcome after a very long wait.

During her traineeship, Madison expanded her workplace skills, contributed ideas for promoting animals and became an integral member of the Animal Rehoming Centre team.

Thank you to Kate English, Felicity Smith and the Bathurst Regional Council Animal Rehoming Centre team for supporting Madison’s journey.

Congratulations, Madison. Your work is creating meaningful outcomes for animals and the people welcoming them into their homes. 🐶
