TALKS and TEA at the BATHURST REGIONAL ART GALLERY
Wednesday 10th June at 10.30AM.
Join Volunteer Gallery Guides Kerry Mahony and Denise Payne to explore and gain insights into our two new winter exhibitions. Afterwards enjoy a chat and morning tea.
Elizabeth Day: The Fragility of Goodness: The Prison on the Landscape and Other Stories. Elizabeth Day uses textile art to convey her passion for early colonial history. Based in Tasmania and Sydney, Elizabeth has worked as a prison and mental health care worker. Her installations focus on the lasting impact of colonial prison systems and especially their effect on women and First Nations peoples. The Bathurst Gaol is included here in a whole new light!
Heather Dunn: Found. Local artist Heather Dunn is well-known for her exquisite woven tapestries. This Foyer Exhibition is the product of a road trip to South and Western Australia where she has captured the distinctive landscape colours in her small weavings. She has used “found” pieces of wire and steel to frame and anchor her works.
These exhibitions will appeal to everyone who has an interest in history and especially to all those who have ever dabbled in wool crafts: spinning, dying, knitting, weaving.
Come along and check out these thought-provoking FREE exhibitions!
Date: Wednesday 10th June, 2026. Time: 10.30 am
Place: Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, 70/78 Keppel St, Bathurst

Way Back Wednesday . . . .
William Street
A view from the corner of William and Howick Streets, Bathurst in 1873. A glimpse of the School of the Arts can be seen on the right of the photograph.

On the left of the photograph is the Cobb & Co booking office. James Rutherford was
born in America in 1827, and he immigrated to Australia in 1855. In 1857 he became the
manager of the coaching firm, he became a partner in 1861 and appointed
general manager. Bathurst became the headquarters of the firm in 1862.
Next to Cobb & Co at 78 William Street, the two-storey building, was built for the Bank of Australasia, in 1844, Henry Rotton was the tenant, and he opened the Victoria Inn. The Joint Stock Bank bought the building in 1863, and it was converted to a bank and was opened on the 4th of January 1864. The building was demolished in 1972.
Further along the street is the establishment of Henry Butterworth, a chemist & druggist and Henry Owen’s Clothing Store.
