The team at Marine Rescue Batemans Bay had the pleasure of recognising Michael Dolan for his long and dedicated service to Marine Rescue NSW.
In the company of Unit Commander Rod Ingamells, former Monaro Director Glenn Felkin ESM presented Michael with two significant honours:
• 15‑Year MRNSW Service Clasp — awarded to volunteers who have completed
fifteen years of committed service to their Unit and the boating community.
• 15‑Year National Medal — a prestigious award from the Governor‑General
recognising sustained service, loyalty, and dedication to the
community over a long period.

Congratulations, Michael. Your contribution over the past fifteen years has been outstanding, and we are proud to celebrate this milestone with you.

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay – Vessel & Radio Activity Day

Last Saturday, Marine Rescue Batemans Bay held a special Vessel and Radio Activity Day, joined by members from Marine Rescue Tuross who brought their MR25 Flood Boat for afternoon exercises. The day began at 0800 with introductions and a briefing of planned activities, concluding at 1500 hours after a full schedule of operations.

We were joined by Sydney Morning Herald journalist Tom McCann, who accompanied the Zone Deputy Operations Manager(ZDOM) Glenn Sullivan aboard BM30 to observe and report on our capability exercises. These included towing assistance, RWC retrieval, and patient transfer scenarios, starting with a hypothermia case that progressed to a full CPR and resuscitation onboard, followed by a DV return from sea to Hanging Rock.

Our Radio Room managed communications with Ambulance Control and coordinated radio traffic to ZDOM and BM30, while Tom conducted interviews with Radio Watchkeeper Robert MacArthur, RWC Vessel Manager Peter Cox, Unit Commander Rod Ingamells, and ZDOM Glenn Sullivan.

The afternoon featured a simulated Jet Ski emergency near the northwest corner of the Batemans Bay Bridge, requiring potential life‑saving intervention and a Man Over Board retrieval using the MR25 Flood Boat’s front‑gate access. Fire drills were also conducted aboard BM30. It was a full‑on, high‑energy day that kept everyone focused and engaged from start to finish.

Congratulations, Iain Walker, on becoming a qualified Radio Operator.

Iain recently completed all components of his radio training and assessment, earning his Radio Operator certificate and epaulettes. His pathway included the VHF Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency, the Radio Operator Skills Log, the Learner Activity Book and Workshop, along with many hours of hands‑on learning in the radio room.

With his qualification now complete, Iain has taken up his position on the radio watch roster and is already contributing as part of our dedicated Radio Operator team. The Batemans Bay radio room plays a vital role in keeping our boating community safe, monitoring vessel movements, supporting log‑ons and log‑offs, and assisting boaters when they need help. The next time you call Marine Rescue Batemans Bay, it may be Iain you hear on the radio or phone.

Recognising 15 Years of Service – Peter Withington & Peter O’Connor

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay is proud to recognise two of our long‑serving volunteers, Peter Withington and Peter O’Connor, who have each been awarded the 15‑year clasp in acknowledgement of their outstanding commitment to our Unit and the local boating community.

Peter and Peter have each played an important role in strengthening our operational capability, supporting training, and helping ensure our rescue vessels and radio operations remain ready to respond whenever the community needs us.

We thank both Peters for their 15 years of dedicated volunteer service. We are honoured to celebrate this milestone with them.

Last Thursday, we celebrated our Annual General Meeting, a night of recognition, pride and community. We are pleased to share that Rod Ingamells was reinstated as Unit Commander for another two years. Congratulations Rod.

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay assisted NSW National Parks on Saturday, 13 June, after an entangled humpback whale was spotted south of Batemans Bay. The whale was towing around 46 metres of fishing line, two buoys, and seaweed, roughly 13 kg of drag and was struggling as it migrated north.

Our crew on Batemans 30 tracked the whale for 20 km, providing constant updates to National Parks. The whale was lost and relocated three times, diving for up to 15 minutes at a time, but was found again through vigilant lookout work and maintaining course and speed.

At Pebbly Beach, Batemans 30 met Ulladulla MR30, which was transporting the Large Whale Disentanglement Team. The team successfully freed the whale, which immediately moved more freely and at a faster pace.

After a long day on the water, our crew returned to base proud of the outcome. Well done to all the crew members and radio operators supporting the rescue.

Crew Training Day & Night – Marine Rescue Batemans Bay

Last weekend, Crew 4 completed an intensive weekend of day and night training, building capability across a wide range of core skills essential for safe and effective operations on the water.

Across both days, members trained in man‑overboard recovery, navigation, vessel handling, berthing, radar use, lookout duties, and knot‑tying. A focus presentation was provided by the Operations Manager, Brian on the mechanical aspects of Batemans 30. Thank you, Brian.

On Saturday night, the crew proceeded upriver for dedicated night training on Bateman's 30. This provided an excellent opportunity to understand the differences between daytime and night operations, including the increased reliance on radar, navigation aids, disciplined lookout procedures, and clear communication.

The team performed strongly and gained valuable experience in low‑visibility conditions. A solid effort from all involved, and great to see continued progress across the team.

Great news to share following our recent rescue on the water. The dog we rescued from Snapper Island was safely reunited with his owner.

This is a wonderful outcome and another example of our community's vigilance and the dedication of our volunteers, who responded quickly when help was needed.

Thank you to the Country Women’s Association – Batemans Bay Branch for providing first-rate sandwiches for our participants and volunteers at the recent Women’s SAREX event.

The sandwiches were excellent quality and great value for money, keeping everyone fueled and ready for a full day of training on and off the water.
