Thank you to the Country Women’s Association – Batemans Bay Branch for providing first-rate sandwiches for our participants and volunteers at the recent Women’s SAREX event.

The sandwiches were excellent quality and great value for money, keeping everyone fueled and ready for a full day of training on and off the water.

Building Future Leaders: Women’s SAREX Hosted by Batemans Bay

Last weekend, Marine Rescue Batemans Bay proudly hosted a Women’s SAREX for members from all units south of Sydney through to Eden. Over two full days, participants took part in leadership and development activities, including intensive radio training, navigation, using MFDs for search patterns and route building, and a series of on‑water challenges.

For the on‑water exercises, crews were deliberately mixed from different bases to test their ability to unite as one team on each vessel. Masters from all vessels agreed that the participants came together exceptionally well, demonstrating teamwork, professionalism, and a strong commitment to safety throughout every scenario.

This SAREX was designed to build capability and encourage women to join Marine Rescue and step confidently into leadership roles, including Executive positions, Vessel Master, Coxswain, Watch Officer, Unit Commander, and Deputy Unit Commander pathways.

We congratulate all participants and wish them every success as they continue their chosen journey in Marine Rescue.

Four New Ratings and Plenty to Celebrate

Last week, our members came together for our Unit Meeting and to celebrate the achievements of four dedicated volunteers. We were joined by Liv Ford, the Monaro Region Zone Training Manager, who presented the well-deserved certificates recognising the successful completion of their ratings.

Ryan Watton achieved his rating as a Rescue Watercraft Operator, Ailsa Smith achieved her rating as a Radio Operator, Ian Luck achieved his rating as a Crew, and David Roulston achieved his award as a Coxswain Restricted. These accomplishments represent many months of commitment, training, and hard work by our volunteers, and we congratulate each of them on their outstanding efforts.
Their achievements strengthen our capability and ensure we remain ready to save lives on the water.

We also extend our sincere thanks to the trainers, mentors, and support members who guided them throughout their training.

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay – ANZAC Day 2026

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay was honoured to take part in today’s ANZAC Day March in Batemans Bay. Eleven of our volunteers proudly represented the Unit, including several members who have previously served in the Australian Defence Force.

During the Commemorative Service, a wreath was laid at the Honour stone on behalf of the entire Unit as our tribute to those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the Service, our rescue vessel Batemans 30 was opened to the public at the Town Wharf. Our volunteers welcomed visitors aboard and shared how our team continues to serve the community through marine safety and rescue.

We thank everyone who attended the March and Service, and we acknowledge all who have served and continue to serve.

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay has adapted its weekend training program to help reduce fuel use while still keeping our crews rescue‑ready. Over the past three weekends, our members completed shorter but highly focused training sessions.

Batemans 30 our large white vessel, remained on its mooring at Snapper Island while crews practised swimmer recovery using our Rescue Water Craft (Jet Skis) and the U-Safe, a remote-controlled rescue device, supported by a mother vessel providing advanced first-aid capability.

Training finished with towing exercises, safely securing and returning a distressed vessel to Hanging Rock. Batemans 30, Batemans 21, Batemans 10, Batemans 11 and two training Rescue Water Craft from Headquarters, crewed by our new RWC Operators and trainees all took part.

A big thank you to all 11 of our volunteers for their commitment and professionalism during these intensive and very successful training weekends.

This is training is critical to us saving lives on the water and supporting our local boating community. Well done to all involved

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay recently hosted a special ceremony recognising a number of volunteers from the Monaro region with their NSW Premier's Flood Emergency Citations in recognition of their efforts during major flood events between 2021 and 2023.

Visit from Fiona Phillips MP – Member for Gilmore

Marine Rescue Batemans Bay was pleased to welcome Fiona Phillips MP to our Unit recently for an important discussion about the ongoing challenges we face with fundraising and grant opportunities.

Unit Commander Rod Ingamells, along with several of our volunteers, spoke with Fiona about the pressures on our Unit as we work to maintain our operational capability and skills in support of our boating community. The conversation was informative, constructive and very much appreciated. It provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the realities of sustaining a volunteer‑based emergency service that operates 24/7, 365 days a year.

Following the discussion, Fiona toured the Unit, reviewing a number of items we have purchased over the past few months through grants supported by her office. She also visited our Radio Room, met and spoke with our volunteers, and walked through the new extension. In addition, she viewed our Rescue Water Craft (Jet Skis), our rescue vessel Batemans 21, our vehicles and the other assets we rely on to save lives on the water.

In true hands‑on spirit, she even climbed onto one of the Jet Skis to get a feel for the equipment our volunteers use.

We thank Fiona for taking the time to visit, listen and engage with the challenges and achievements of the volunteers at Marine Rescue Batemans Bay.

NSW Maritime will be running flare collection programs again in April 2026. For boat owners this is a free and safe way to dispose of your expired flares.

The mobile collection program operates 3 statewide collection rounds during peak boating season (i.e. November, January, and April), visiting 50 designated sites across NSW. View the map and dates:

Fight Fire and Sea Survival – Congratulations to Our Participants

We recently hosted a Fight Fire and Sea Survival course, with five students taking part – three from Batemans Bay: Ken, Ryan and Jacob, and two from our wider region, Mirabai and Greg. Thank you for attending our course.

The course is one of the most practical and hands‑on components of our training program. Participants gained real experience in:

🔥 Firefighting Skills – Students learned how to safely and effectively fight fires using live equipment, various firefighting aids and procedures.
✨ Flare Firing – A controlled flare demonstration was held on the rock wall at Hanging Rock Boat Ramp, giving students the opportunity to understand correct flare use and safety procedures.
🛟 Life Raft Training – The life raft and swimming component was completed at the local pool in Batemans Bay, where students practised entering, exiting and working as a team in simulated emergency conditions.

All five students successfully passed the course, and we congratulate them on their commitment and professionalism throughout the day.

A big thank you to Harley M (Assessor) and Rod I (SME), who conducted the course and validated two new Assessors, Byrony C and David M, which increases our capabilities at the Unit, and to the other volunteers who made the course possible.
