Last day to see Ngilina nganyundiya muya-la (it's in my breath/soul) as part of National Reconciliation Week, closing tomorrow on Sat 30 May!

Otis Hope Carey is the National Reconciliation Week 2026 artist, presenting Gaagal.

This survey exhibition marks a significant milestone for Gumbaynggirr artist Otis Hope Carey, charting a decade of profound creative evolution. Spanning his 2016 beginnings to the most recent, visceral explorations of Country, the exhibition highlights the kinetic element that connects Carey’s history as a professional surfer to his contemporary mastery of the canvas.

Closing event: ARTIST TALK WITH TIA MADDEN
Sat 30 May, 2-3pm

Hear directly from the artist about the significance of the illegible graffitied forms as seen in Backjump. Tia Madden has been working across language and the linguistics of symbols, finding interest in the porous boundaries between drawing and writing. Come listen to how her time in Cairo has shaped the direction of her practice, how environment becomes a co-author and the expansion of drawing in Misreading Misreading. Saturday 30 May will also be the last day to view the exhibition!

EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

To Handle / To Hold centres the material of clay and fibre as barometers of cultural history. It is a complex interrogation of social politics, identity and the sensory of the handmade in the digital age. Featuring the works of four emerging artists – Kyiesha Booth, Alice Royds, Anisha Sawaid and Sirinya Stuebe – the exhibition juxtaposes textiles with ceramics, alongside the convergence of materials and concepts in a single artwork or across an individual’s practice. Through material crossings of fibre and clay, the assembly of sculpture and installation redirects signifiers of domestic space and female labour to contemporary art and social discourse.

Alice Royds
Anisha Sawaid

To get to Bankstown Arts Centre, you must walk past, or encounter through line of sight, the neighbouring trainline. Trains pass by at frequent intervals in a blur of windows, doors and faces, and every so often, you might also glimpse a sprawling line of graffiti. Street writers call this a backjump: a piece painted quickly on the side of a train when parked briefly in traffic or at a terminal, before it proceeds en route to ferry commuters across the metropolis. Of course, backjumps are made with the knowledge they’ll likely be washed off by the day or week’s end and so these markings are not intended to last, nor, necessarily, should they be read or understood. A backjump and graffiti more broadly, is simply made to be witnessed.

- Tia Madden, Artist of Backjump

Hear more from the artist on the poetics of illegibility and the significance of marks that defy to meaning.

Some of our youngest visitors from Kids Art Club have been very inspired by Otis Hope Carey's survey exhibition. They asked big questions about the ocean and family, and even made their own paintings inspired by the large ones on the walls.

Come visit Ngilina nganyundiya muya-la with your little ones if you haven't already, or bring the child within to appreciate the stories of the Gaagal.
