The idea behind the Birthing Kit began more than 30 years ago.
In 1995, Adelaide doctor Dr Joy O’Hazy attended the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women. There, she heard actor Sally Field describe a small hygiene kit she had seen being used during births in Nepal.
The concept was simple: when sterile medical supplies are unavailable, clean basic items can dramatically reduce infection for both mother and baby.
Dr O’Hazy returned to Adelaide determined to create something similar.
Working with Dr Julie Monis-Ivett and volunteers from the Zonta Club of Adelaide Hills, the first birthing kits were assembled and distributed.
What started as a small volunteer project soon grew into something much bigger.
✨ The first 100 kits landed in PNG in 1999
✨ By 2006, BKFA was officially established
✨ In 2012, the millionth kit was assembled
✨ In 2019, that number reached 2 million
✨ In 2025, BKFA distributed its 3-millionth kit
Today, tens of thousands of volunteers assemble kits each year – helping women around the world give birth more safely. 🌷
