Books in Homes Australia Our vision is to create an Australia where every child and family has access to books in the home.

06/10/2026

We have several supporters to thank for donating some newly minted books to us, which will be redistributed through our network to children who fit into the definition of our mission, that is, those "living in remote, disadvantaged, and low socio-economic circumstances".

Thank you to Rob Feldman for being an invaluable part of the Role Model team. Rob has donated several boxes of graphic novels to Books in Homes.

Thank you to long-time Role Model and supporter Wendy Lawrence who donated a box of her new title Paru: The True Story of an Orphaned Indian Elephant. Wendy specialised in rehabilitating raptors in her previous home in the north coast NSW region and over the years has shared lots of wonderful stories about her animal rescue work.

Thank you to Ashleigh Purcell of Wildflower Stories for donating several boxes of rhyming picture books for the 0-7 age group from her publishing company.

Thank you to George Paras who donated several copies of his recent children's book on mindfulness drawn from the great Eastern teachings The Way of Little Things.

Please welcome our new staff member Jodi Toering, who has joined Books in Homes as the new Book Giving Assembly Coordinator.

Jodi, who is Ballarat- and Melbourne-based, will work with Sponsors, Role Models, and Schools to oversee and manage communications that support Schools' delivery of Book Giving Assembly programs each term.

A little about Jodi...

Growing up on a wheat farm in Victoria’s Mallee region, Jodi developed an early love of storytelling, communication and learning. She went on to build a diverse and successful career spanning education, writing, community engagement and the arts.

An award-winning children’s author, Jodi’s bestselling books connect children with stories, nature and the world around them. Her work has taken her into schools and communities across Australia, where she has led writing workshops, collaborated with educators and families, and created opportunities for children to engage with books and creativity.

Jodi brings strong communication, coordination and relationship-building skills to her work, along with a genuine passion for making books and literacy accessible and meaningful for every child.

Outside of work, she enjoys creating art, travelling and spending time with her family and pets on her bush block in regional Victoria.

A NEW CHAPTER FOR BOOKS IN HOMES AUSTRALIA ❤️📚

We are delighted to welcome Shona Taylor as our new Chief Executive Officer.

Many of you may already know Shona through her long-standing connection with Books in Homes and Mainfreight, one of our major Sponsors.

For more than 10 years, Shona has supported our program, shared our belief in the importance of books for children and communities, and worked closely with the Books in Homes team. Now, following her retirement from Mainfreight, we're thrilled that she is bringing that experience and passion into the organisation itself.

Shona will lead Books in Homes as we continue our work with supporters, schools and communities across Australia, helping more children discover the joy of books and a lifelong love of reading.

Our current CEO, Peter Large, will transition from the CEO role over the coming months and will continue as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees.

We look forward to sharing this next chapter with our Books in Homes community.

Here are just four of the 17 students at Central School in outback NSW who received their three books-of-choice in their book bags during Term 2, 2026. Thank you to Waratah Education Foundation for making it possible through your generous long-term sponsorship. The kids are all smiling! They will be smiling at home too when they add their new titles to their respective home libraries.

ROTARY TRIVIA NIGHT TURNS FUN INTO BOOKS FOR MOREE EAST
Laughter, friendly rivalry and a shared commitment to helping children access books were all part of the mix when the Rotary Club of Turramurra held its annual Trivia Fundraising Night on Tuesday 18 August 2026.

Now in its fifth year, the event raises funds to support the Books in Homes program at Moree East Public School. This year’s Trivia Night attracted 110 registrations, bringing together members from eight Rotary clubs, along with friends and family, and raised an impressive $6,100.

The evening featured plenty of good-natured competition, including trivia, a silent auction, raffle, caption competition and a lively game of “Sit down if…”. Local businesses and Rotary Club members generously donated prizes, including accommodation, paintings, resin art, baby blankets, ch*****ne, food and fashion vouchers and a tour of Parliament House, with a box of beautiful new children’s books contributed by Books in Homes, which was also eagerly snapped up during the evening.

Books in Homes enters a dormant term during Term 3, 2026 but we like to pause and celebrate our Term 2, 2026 Book Giving Assemblies and to thank our Sponsors. In this case, we want to highlight Lemnos Primary School. Lemnos is a small rural town in northern Victoria, located in the Shepparton / Goulburn Valley region. The school is proudly sponsored by the Kensington Gardens Craft Group, and we know for a fact that the students, whose numbers range from 6 to 10 over the course of the year, LOVE receiving their books-of-choice each term.
