Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy

Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy Saving the critically endangered "Big Scrub" rainforest in the hinterland of Byron Bay.

We do on-ground rainforest restoration, which involves caring for patches of remnant rainforest and restoring rainforest on land from which rainforest has been cleared. A series of major projects have been successfully completed over the last ten years, recently in partnership with other key stakeholders we have introduced into the Big Scrub Restoration Program, which has now been extended to care

for patches of endangered rainforest in adjoining areas. Community and landholder engagement and information, including holding the annual Big Scrub Rainforest Day, field days and farm visits, and publishing a newsletter and manuals on rainforest restoration and rainforest w**ds.

Restoration doesn’t always look like tree planting.
Sometimes, it looks like this. 💪🌱

Whether it's taking to the water to pull out invasive water hyacinth or tackling to***co w**d, this hands-on bush regeneration work sits at the heart of what we do, alongside the science shaping the future of restoration.

Our bush regenerators have spent over 1,800 (!!) hours out in the field this year keeping our valuable remnants and restoration sites in shape.

Restoration activities like these require ongoing support and investment to ensure their efficacy.

With EOFY approaching, your support helps equip and coordinate days like these. Help us continue our efforts to ensure the wellbeing of our native ecosystems and make room for the return of the Big Scrub rainforest. 🌳✨

What is genetic diversity, and why does it matter for rainforest restoration? 🧬🌳

It's a big topic, and key to our Science Saving Rainforests program. In this recent article for The Echo we've tried to explain it in a simple and accessible way. The piece explores how habitat fragmentation has affected the genetic diversity of the Big Scrub rainforest and why restoring that diversity is so important for the long-term health and resilience of rainforest species.

We're passionate about making conservation science easier to understand, and we hope this article helps shed light on the world's first program to restore genetic diversity at a landscape scale.

It’s been a landmark year for Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy. After nearly a decade of research, collaboration and planning, our Science Saving Rainforests program has reached a major milestone.

A landscape being prepared for something never done before.
This is the beginning of the Living Seedbank Plantation — the foundation of Science Saving Rainforests.

In the pouring rain, this day was made possible by an incredible team of volunteers who share our vision for what this landscape can become.

As EOFY approaches, we’re calling on our community to help support the next stage of this work. Head to the link in our bio to donate and be a part of bringing Science Saving Rainforests to life.

How do you know restoration is working?

You listen. 🐦🦉

Through our monitoring programs, we’re tracking the return of life to restored rainforest — and the signs are powerful.

Ecologists Georgia Beyer and David Milledge have been running our bioacoustic bird monitoring project and found that even in plantings less than 10 years old, species like the Eastern Tube-nosed Bat are returning. 🦇

A signal that habitat is recovering.
That complexity is rebuilding.
That the forest is coming back to life. 🌳

Ongoing monitoring like this takes time, expertise, and resources . Your EOFY support helps make it possible. Follow the links in our profile to donate!

This is what Science Saving Rainforests looks like up close.
A deeply coordinated effort between scientists, propagule collectors, nursery experts – you name it.

Here's a snapshot of our partners at Firewheel Rainforest Nursery at work, taking care of the valuable propagules. Their dedication is unmatched!

It’s detailed. It’s deliberate. And it’s decades in the making. This EOFY help continue this growth and support the hands behind the work 👉 Link in our bio to donate.

Through school plantings and community programs, the next generation is getting their hands in the soil, learning how to care for rainforest, and becoming part of something bigger.

Our Big Scrub Schools Education Program aims to foster a meaningful connection with the Big Scrub Rainforest, encourage environmental stewardship and inspires the next generation to pursue futures in environmental science and management.

Because long-term change doesn’t just grow in the ground. It grows in people. 🌱

With EOFY approaching, your support helps keep these programs running by connecting community and inspiring the next generation of rainforest caretakers.

Mapping, surveying, analysing, labelling. Science. 🔬

A whole team of specialists, working behind the scenes to get it right.

Whether it's the dedication of our propagule whizz Hilke, the tireless expertise of our bush regenerators or the glue that keeps it all together that is our manager, Renee, this kind of complex, coordinated effort is what makes Science Saving Rainforests possible.

And it requires ongoing support.

We don’t just plant trees. We back every step with science. And we plan forward.

Through our partnerships with the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, evolutionary ecologist Dr Robert Kooyman and Firewheel Rainforest Nursery, Science Saving Rainforests is grounded in decades of research and expertise.

We’re ensuring every tree is more than a planting. It’s part of a carefully designed system built for resilience, diversity, and long-term survival.

This is restoration, done right. Please consider donating to support a cause backed by the experts 👉 Follow the links in our bio and invest in the future of the Big Scrub.

Nearly 30 years of newsletters! Does anyone remember them?

Before social media, before email inboxes... there were these. 📰

A lifetime of knowledge in every page. Local historian Ken Dorey used to put these together and and is still a contributor for the newsletter today!

We know how to restore rainforest because we’ve been doing it for decades.

Support the next chapter of rainforest restoration this EOFY. Head to our website, bigscrubrainforest.org, or follow links in our profile to donate.
