Thanks Lorraine Sweet ....
I was also one of the students from New Cannindah who transferred to Monto School going in the back of Lockie Loutitt's cream truck. Have lived interstate for a very long time however whenever back in Monto I always take a drive out to see the
still standing (with a big lean) flag pole where the school was.
Good memories of those days at that little one room school.

Another memory from Carolyn Nielsen ...

I was one of the students who then went to Monto after the New Cannindah school closed. Lockie Loutitt was our school bus driver. The cream truck.

Thank you Margaret Mundt for this great story from Neville.........
Neville Mundt adds the following- When the New Cannindah School closed only some of the pupils transferred to Bancroft State School names included Leane, Pickering & Craig- the other pupils went by school bus to Monto - a new school bus run was started to cater for those pupils to Bancroft - owned & operated by my Uncle Victor Mundt who also transported his own school kids & those of Norm Mundt & Selwyn Mundt together with other members of the Craig, Ball & Norman family. I also remember the relocation of the New Cannindah School to Bancroft in about 1963 as a
whole on the back of a truck-
trailer combination assisted by many of the local identities. Percy Tucker was the builder in charge. My mother Doris Mundt was an original & proud member of the Bancroft QCWA
Recently I visited the original site of the NC School- the flag pole still remains - looking much the worse for wear but it’s history remains.

Thanks to Felice Gordon and Zoe Stiles, we have established the QCWA Bancroft building was built in 1930 as the new Wilson Valley School near Gayndah. Proudly 94 years old and still standing strong thanks to the dedicated QCWA Monto-Bancroft past members.

Another history post & question. The Bancroft QCWA hall was moved to New Cannindah circa 1948. Prior to this it was operating as Wilson Valley School (near Gayndah). Trove archives mention this school opening in 1916 and operating until 1944 (30 years). Could the building in fact be 108 years old? I invite any of our Gayndah mates to contribute.

Today, thanks to Helen Goody & Girlie Goody some great history has been unravelled on the life and times of the Bancroft QCWA building.

Earliest so far:

1. In late 1946 (78 years ago) the removal of the closed Wilson Valley School (via Gayndah) was moved to New Cannindah. It took until 1948 to get there through delays in projects at the time..
2. Opened as New Cannindah School (Bancroft) 19/4 1948 with 11 pupils.
3. It closed on 6/7 1958 (10 years history) and students moved on to Bancroft State School.
4. Sold to QCWA for 125 pounds at that time 66 years ago.

(Latest so far)

What a tough little building! I am sure it's done its time to stay.

I am sure there is more history out there. Look forward to your contributions.

There were some pretty amazing pioneers of the Bancroft QCWA Monto-Bancroft in the past. Feel free to share your family history & photos. Monto & Bancroft Branches looks to have merged in 2013.

We are inviting you to show your support in reinstating the Bancroft QCWA group and co-share with other community groups, so that the building is not sold and removed by private sale which is currently in the pipeline. The building is owned by QCWA but it is on a Health Reserve. Reinstating as a community asset will keep it here in Bancroft.

Plans so far:

1: Young families in the area as a playgroup
2: Co-share with other community groups for meeting purposes ie Rail Trail.
3. Place to get together on special or family occassions.

We are working closely with QCWA, so please feel free to share your comments, photos, and history so we can gather this up and present a case.
