It’s Men’s Health Week (June 15-21), so we thought we’d shout out to the men in our community and say a huge thanks for showing up and prioritising their health and wellbeing.

Sometimes showing up can be difficult for a whole host of reasons, but we promise that if you show up at Balwyn Evergreen, it will be well worth it.

We spoke to one of our exercise clients, Peter Waddick, about why he shows up each week - hint, it’s not just for the morning tea!

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEEAD), which provides an opportunity for communities to stand together against the abuse, mistreatment and neglect of older people.

At Balwyn Evergreen, our mission is to foster a community of friendship, health, wellbeing and independence that includes the right of older people to live free from abuse, discrimination and harm.

We all have a role to play in creating communities where older people feel safe, valued and respected.

To get involved in WEAAD activities across Eastern Melbourne that promote respect, dignity, safety and inclusion for older people, visit: https://eclc.org.au/eean/weaad/

If you are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, elder abuse, help is available. Contact the free Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 368 821, Monday to Friday, 10am–5pm.

If you are concerned about an older person, encourage them to seek support or speak with a trusted health professional.

The combination of fresh country air and artisan chocolate made for a great day out for our Outings Crew at the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie recently.

Plenty of laughs were had, which is always the case when you’re in good company.

Our Outings Program is a fantastic way for older people to get social and see the countryside.

👉 If you’re keen to shake up your week with a day trip, please contact the office - 9836 9681 / [email protected]

👍 Psst: the Outings Newsletter, which covers the next four months, will be out next week!

Tan, one of our wonderful kitchen volunteers, is all smiles while preparing a dessert of poached pears for our Supported Lifestyle Program.

Each week, we receive a delivery from the food rescue organisation, FoodFilled, and our volunteers work together to put it to good use in our programs.

Not only do we produce delicious meals and baked goods for our clients, but we also divert valuable food from landfill. Everyone’s a winner with our food program!

If you’re sitting at home thinking, Balwyn Evergreen’s kitchen sounds like a great place to volunteer, then you’re in luck because we’re currently looking for a cook who enjoys home-style cooking to join our team on a Wednesday or Friday from 9.30am-1pm (approx).

We can't stress this enough - you don't have to be an executive chef to take on this role, there are no Michelin stars here! But what we do have is a lot of heart and a genuine desire to work together. Our food is hearty, balanced and home made - exactly like what you'd make in your own kitchen, just a bit more.

🙏 If this sounds like you or someone you know, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Tania - 9836 9681 / [email protected]

National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Balwyn Evergreen Centre acknowledges the Wurundjeri people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It’s National Walking Month! As the cooler weather rolls in, it’s more important than ever to keep moving, and walking is one of the simplest, safest, and most enjoyable ways to do just that.

Our Exercise Coordinator, Baylee Eastham AEP, has penned some thoughts on the benefits of walking and how to incorporate it into your routine.
