Working bee this Saturday 18th April!

This weekend we return to Buckley’s Reserve to tackle the pittosporums. They’ve had a good run through summer but now it’s our turn to bring them down and allow the native underbrush to thrive. We had a couple really good sessions in 2024 and 2025 that made a dent in the local population, but it’s time to get our hands dirty again to rid the nature reserve of this invasive w**d ✊.

Also, morning tea (and coffee) 😊

Join us this weekend:
- Saturday 18th April
- 9–11:30am
- Buckley’s Reserve, corner Balnarring and Myers roads
- (Please park opposite Rare Hare vineyard)

As always, bring sturdy boots and good gloves, and maybe some waterproof pants as we enjoy this rainfall! 🫶

See you Saturday!

How do greenhouses grow? With lots of people (half a dozen) working together over long stretches of time (7 hours :). And it looks a little something like this… hit it!

(Also, keep your eyes peeled for the occasional chook wandering around and inspecting the progress 😛)

We look forward to seeing what ’s BEAT team grow inside their new greenhouse 👀👀👀

Thanks again to for supporting this community project 🙏

New greenhouse for the kids at Balnarring Primary!

Over two weekends, MCC Landcare built a greenhouse for the kids at Balnarring Primary School facebook.com/balnarring25

Weekend 1 saw the foundation created with careful tape measuring and even pythagoras, and then perfectly levelled. An important step; if it was out of square the knock-on effect would not be appreciated during assembly (the team love a challenge, but not *that* much of a challenge :) On weekend 2 the parts were laid out and the team’s intuition was called upon. The bets were that it would be job done in four hours, just in time for lunch. Seven hours later Balnarring Primary had their very own greenhouse!

Each year the Merricks Coolart Landcare Group and Balnarring Environment Action Team (BEAT) students get together to work on aspects of the nearby Balnarring to Bay Biolink. Last year with the assistance of the Council we collected, cleaned, and labelled indigenous seeds. This year the students will propagate these seeds in their brand new greenhouse to provide a safe (away from birds) and warm environment for the seedlings to germinate and grow. The plants will be later planted around the school and in the Balnarring to the Bay Biolink.

This project could not have been possible without the financial support from the Community Bank Balnarring & District and the tireless work of teachers and staff from the school. It’s a great partnership between the school, bank and Landcare which is reaping great rewards for our future custodians of the land.

Look at this crack team of Holmesglen TAFE students! They were out at our reveg project conducting much-needed fauna research. They came packing with cameras to set up to capture what wildlife cruises the plains (well, we already suspect wallabies from the looks of the nibbled plant tops, but who knows? Maybe it’s bunyips or drop bears??)

The diploma students will collate the findings so we can compare actual fauna to the initial fauna survey done on the site in 2021.

More on this in due course :)

It’s w**d whackin’ Wednesday at the Balnarring bush Food Garden!

It’s been a while since we dipped our trowels into the Bush Food Garden. Please join us is bringing the w**ds under control this Wednesday at 9am. We expect this to be a quick in-and-out type blitz so bring your A-game! (As well as sturdy shoes and good gloves, obvs).

Another watering session in the books for the hot and dry start to 2026 at Saltbush Balnarring Beach This time with 20% more water (5000L) and 30% more people (8 in total :). In today’s session we tackled trees and shrubs doing it tough through the middle of the paddock and we got a fair way through. Estimate is we’ve now given 60–70% of the 7500 plants a good drink. They really need our (and your ;) helping hands 😅.

Thank you to our amazing and persistent planting project sponsors Community Bank Balnarring & District

Of course, thank you to the handful of dedicated and wonderful members who came out to practise their farmer carry exercises 💪.

We’ll continue to monitor the situation over there and the weather in general to decide whether more watering action is needed this summer. In the meantime, those who can rain-dance please do so 🙏

ps. Zero (0) danger noodles (snakes) seen today 👍
pps. One (1) shoe blowout 🤣

Gday.
It’s been a while.
Happy new year!
It’s February 🤣

After a relaxing hibernation we’ve emerged from our holiday cocoons and begun working. The crew have taken a look at the plantings at Saltbush and as you can expect it’s drrrrryyyyyyy.

On Monday we experimented with an idea for watering we had at the beginning of the planting season which is to arrive on site with several 1000L water tanks, and a whole lotta of buckets. In short, we think it went well, well enough that we’ll be doing another session in the coming weeks. This one will be for members only — we’re still working out efficiencies in operation so want to cap the numbers for now.

Anyway, that’s a quick update.
We hope you had a relaxing holiday period.

The Balnarring Bush Food Garden is officially opened to the public!

Tuesday morning’s ceremony opened with a acknowledgement to Bunurong country by Barbara Long, Bush Food Garden (BFG) pioneer and (probably) official ambassador (in lieu of guest from The Bunurong Land Council), followed by an introduction to the BFG project and its purpose of community education on traditional owners’ plant customs for food and medicine. There are a few such gardens dotted around the state and now we have our very own in Balnarring.

Balnarring kindie kids attended in abundance and provided energy, magic, and music, singing us a several songs, but came into their own when the gusty winds took the printed recipe sheets to flight which needed to be promptly collected. Handy! but not only that, these are the very same children who helped plant many of the species in the garden. How talented are the kids from Balnarring preschool?!

Recipe sheets? Bush food?

Yes indeed! For the sampling were delicious treats made with bush foods and included: cheese twists with pepper berry and saltbush, chocolate and river mint cupcakes, wattleseed meringues with lemon myrtle cream, and wattleseed scones with rosella jam (rosella being the shrub related to hibiscus and NOT our feathered Australian friend…).

Check out The Native Harvest Kitchen cookbook by Dr. Dorin Gupta from the University of Melbourne for recipes: https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/Recipes-bring-Australias-native-harvest-into-the-kitchen (link for cookbook toward the bottom of page).

Some of our treats were created with Kakadu Plum Co rubs and spices, a local group bringing native foods to the larger market. If you want to sample bush foods but can’t wait for your garden to grow give these guys a go.
