Celebrating the tantalising Taste of the Tropics Season 2 in Cairns!

A wonderful mix of North and Far North QLD filmmakers and foodies gathered to celebrate the Taste of the Tropics series, enjoying food served from each of the episodes and soaking up the creativity and post production vibes!

Screenworks partnered with Screen Queensland and SBS Australiato create opportunities for regional filmmakers and talent. Season 2 featured hosts comedian and actor Steph Tisdell, restaurateur Oliver James and scientist Sharon Cavanagh-Luskin.

The three producing teams were led by Caden Pearson, Tamera Simpson and Kate Boylan-Ascione who were guided by independent Supervising Producer Karen Warner with assistance from Brisbane post-production house The Post Lounge

It was all systems go at Screenworks' 2026 Regional Crew Pathways Program Tasmania backed by Netflix with support from Screen Tasmania and Australian Film Television and Radio School

The group of Tasmanian based participants gathered for an immersive three-day post-production onboarding program, equipping them with valuable skills and contributing to the pipeline of screen talent in Australia.

Led by AFTRS lecturer and industry practitioner Rebecca Edwards, and guest practitioner David Ortiz, participants built foundational skills in unscripted screen workflows, media management and editing, while gaining insight into industry pathways and post-production environments.

Previous Regional Crew Pathways participants include Tasmania’s 2025 recipient, Juliet May who is now working locally with Hive Productions, Gina Weston who secured a Director's Assistant role on action film The Mark, starring Jessica Alba - plus A’mi Gray who has gone on to work with Baz Luhrmann’s Bazmark.

AACTA Pitch: Regional Landscapes, in partnership with Screenworks, is back for 2026, and you have just 2 days left to apply.

Meet the judges:

Deb Cox, co-founder of Every Cloud Productions, whose credits include The Gods of Wheat Street, East of Everything and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Heath Davis, a multi award-winning filmmaker whose work spans Broke, Christmess, Book Week and Locusts.

Sam Jennings, co-founder of Causeway Films alongside Kristina Ceyton, with credits including The Babadook, Bring Her Back and Talk to Me, with Causeway Films a recipient of the 2026 AACTA Byron Kennedy Award.

Screenworks is thrilled to partner with Screen Queensland and SBS Australia on the tantalising second season of Taste of the Tropics.

Audiences will be taken on a delicious culinary journey across North and Far North Queensland with episode hosts comedian and actor Steph Tisdell, restaurateur Oliver James and scientist Sharon Cavanagh-Luskin.

Taste of the Tropics is a hands-on initiative that creates real opportunities for filmmakers while supporting the development of world-class screen content that showcases regional talent.

Episodes will drop on SBS Food and SBS On Demand from Thursday 30 April.

Congratulations to Ben Molenaar - our first Screenworks Digital Games Career Pathway recipient!

Ben is a versatile game developer with a Bachelor of Game Development who is dedicating himself to crafting immersive digital experiences in this rapidly expanding creative field.

Through this program, supported by Screen NSW and Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA), Ben will receive targeted financial support, industry access and career-building opportunities, plus an IGEA membership.

Ben said, "I am incredibly excited to join the Digital Games Pathway program. Having been active in both local community dev groups and the wider industry, I have seen first-hand how vibrant the Australian game development scene is.

"This program represents a unique chance to elevate my work and scale my studio's operations, while allowing me to bring those learnings back to regional talent. It is the perfect catalyst for professional growth and for building meaningful connections within the Australian creative community.”

Ready to experience the full process of making a short film?

Join Screen Fraser Coast for our upcoming 3-day Film Intensive—a unique opportunity for our region to experience the full filmmaking process. Guided by industry experts from Pluggas, you will go from script to screen, learn hands-on with professional equipment (camera, lighting, sound) and rotate through various crew roles. The workshop results in a professionally edited short film.

These events are made possible thanks to the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), a partnership between the Queensland Government and Fraser Coast Regional Council.
