Old Colonists' Club Ballarat

Old Colonists' Club Ballarat The Old Colonist's Club was formed by old miner's, who met in the 1870s and vowed to: help one another, to relieve sick members, to assist members.

The origins of the Ballarat Old Colonists’ Association can be traced back to 1867 when James Oddie instigated a reunion of early gold miners. The group was known initially as the Golden Point Old Pioneers Association and later simply as the Ballarat Pioneers Association. The miners initially met on an ad hoc basis for social purposes and in 1883 meetings were formalised becoming the formal beginn

ing. The name was changed over and finally to its current ‘The Old Colonists’ Association of Ballarat’. The Old Colonists’ Association (OCA) remains as the philanthropic charitable organisation
providing accommodation for elderly people. In the 1920's Charles Anderson Grove was
established where today twenty seven homes are available (constructed in stages between 1923 and 1983) with each Independent Living Unit identified by a name plate referencing the benefactor. Accommodation is offered at significantly below market rates. The Association has been providing low cost accommodation to the elderly since the 1920s. The OCA Board oversees the running of this facility on a voluntary basis. The OCA is a Public Benevolent Institution with the
Australian Tax Office Deductible Gift Recipient Status.

There will also be the traditional Billiards Exhibition and a chance to tour the Club and learn a little more about our history.

It is a great chance to stop for a bite to eat and drink while exploring the heritage festival and introduce friends to the Club.

Thanks in advance to our army of volunteers who ensure we are able to keep up the tradition of Devonshire Tea. From front of house, making the scones, serving our customers and washing the dishes it is a large undertaking and your assistance is greatly appreciated.

See you on Saturday.

All

Thanks to everyone who headed to the Club last Friday night for dinner.
We served over 40 in house cooked roast dinners!
Thanks to Jarred and Ross for cooking a beautiful dinner and to everyone else who lent a hand.

Our dinners are consistently serving over 35 meals each month. It is always fabulous to see so many club members enjoying both a meal and a drink together. Our planning is underway for the next three dinners.

Ballarat Heritage Festival
The Club has committed to Devonshire on Saturday 23 May 2026.

Are you able to lend a hand?
Please call me on 0404 465 760 or speak to me at the Club to volunteer.
We have a few regular volunteers, but it is always nice to have a few extra hands and new faces. The commitment can be for an hour or the day, every bit of assistance is appreciated.

See you at the Club.

Hi All

As a committee we have been busy looking at opportunities to improve the ambience of the Club and encourage members to join us each week. Many of our improvements are reflective of the suggestions from the Club survey conducted last year. We are very encouraged that the improvements have resulted in our Club membership steadily growing and so is attendance on Thursday and Friday nights.

In the first instance we have concentrated on our catering and bar service. This includes improved options for Friday night platters and the last Friday night of the month dinners. We are busy creating a variety of options while considering our financial and staffing constraints. We have seen a large increase in attendance at our dinners leading to our new bookings system, which is being very efficiently managed by Tim. Our bar continues to improve its offerings with the fabulous assistance and guidance of Regina. The feedback from members is very positive.

To further enhance your weekly experience, we have been looking at improved seating options, so you may see a few changes to the configuration of the furniture. We also need to consider our furniture layout due to the increased numbers of patrons. The increased patronage of the Club requires us to ensure easy access from the kitchen to the dining room if there is an emergency situation. It is all a work in progress. As a Club we can also look forward to improved seating on the balcony.

Respectful suggestions are always welcome when it comes to improving the Club. The Committee and I look forward to seeing you soon. If you are taking the opportunity to dine with us tonight, we hope you enjoy our in-house prepared roasts.
