Opening this weekend in Art Space Ballarat.

Julia Howe's exhibition 'Chronic' is an investigation into the hidden battles a life with invisible illness entails. The works form a collective narrative surrounding the symptoms so many navigate daily, and forms an introspective web of experiences and memories, giving space for the unseen to become visible.

Julia Howe is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ballarat and Melbourne, Victoria. Working across photography, oil painting, printmaking and sculpture, her practice is centred around symbolism, visual narrative and process-based making.

Alongside her arts practice, she works commercially as a photographer and graphic designer. Howe’s work explores chronic illness, mental health and the environment, often using everyday objects and materials to reflect lived experience. Her recent book, Walking the Margins, uses teetering assemblages made from everyday objects to represent the symptoms, instability and feelings that can accompany life with chronic illness.

Opening: Sat 27 June, 3-6pm
Open: Tues 7, 14 & 21 July, 11am - 4pm | Wed & Thu - 10am - 6pm
Fri 10am - 7pm |Sat & Sun 10am - 5pm

WHAT IS HIDDEN?

Art you can step inside. Art that breathes. Art that invites curiosity.

HIDDEN is a three-day inflatable art adventure where observation gives way to experience. Wander through large-scale installations, discover unexpected moments and see Civic Hall transformed into a world of colour, light and imagination. No ropes. No barriers. Just exploration.

🧵This weekend we farewelled Art Hub Artist-in-Residence Danielle Francis.
We'd like to thank Danielle for sharing her dressmaking and sewing skills with the community running workshops, drop-in and one-on-one sessions over the past 3 months. We know she helped many a sewing project this autumn and inspired many others to get started.

Now a Ballarat resident, Danielle continues to offer workshops at Thread Den, which she has been running since 2007 in Fitzroy. You can find out more about her wide range of workshop offerings on her website at https://threadden.com🪡🧵

Nominate a local hero for a photographic portrait.

Ballarat Photographer Caroline Fredericks will be moving into Art Hub as our next Artist-in-Residence in July.

Caroline's residency project will be celebrating Ballarat's local heroes. The makers, the carers, the volunteers, the quiet achievers, and the individuals who show up day after day – often without recognition.

As part of the project, Caroline's selected nominees will be photographed, guided by the subject's story. Final portraits will be shared on an online gallery, social media and in a future public exhibition. Find out more at https://sunflowerimaging.com/ballarat_local_heroes/ and nominate someone you think should be recognised and celebrated.
