The Aussie Bird Count, Australia's biggest citizen science event, runs every October, during Bird Week when tens of thousands of Australians will spend just 20 minutes counting the birds around them.

Birdlife Australia bird surveys are coming up in October so if you have registered, here is something else to keep your eye out for. We know they are around, with several sightings on member properties in the Moorabool Catchment, but would you know this rare bird if you spotted one.

There are three parrots in the world that migrate across open water and they all travel between Tasmania and Victoria. The Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster), the Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor) and the Blue-winged Parrot (Neophema chrysostoma). You’ve probably heard of the first two as they are both critically endangered. The Blue-winged Parrot was listed under the EPBC Act as Vulnerable in 2020. Birdlife Bass Coast formed a Blue-winged Parrot Working Group to help prevent this parrot becoming as endangered as the first two. One of their aims is to locate nesting sites on the Victorian mainland. The Orange-bellied Parrot and Swift Parrot ONLY nest in Tasmania, but some Blue-winged Parrots breed on the mainland. There are long term records of Blue-winged Parrots breeding in Victoria, but contemporary records are rare. They have been recorded in the Brisbane Ranges and surrounding areas, but we do not know if they are breeding or merely passing through. If you see any Blue-winged Parrots hanging around a tree hollow, in the park or anywhere in Victoria, please take a photo and record the location.
