Honouring a Baldivis Son
Arthur Peter Knight
Arthur Peter Knight grew up in Baldivis and attended the old Baldivis Primary School. Like so many young men from this district, he left the quiet country life to serve his country during the Second World War. He joined the Royal Australian Navy and served as a Stoker aboard HMAS Armidale.
On the 1st December 1942, during operations in the Timor Sea, the Armidale came under intense Japanese air attack. Arthur Peter Knight was one of the brave sailors who went down with the ship. He was just 26 years old.
He never returned to the farm lands and peaceful surroundings of Baldivis. He never got to see the community grow in to what it is today. But his sacrifice left a lasting mark on the place he once called home.
The Baldivis War Memorial stands today as a proud tribute to Arthur Peter Knight, the crew of HMAS Armidale and all those who have served or are currently serving in the defence force. It ensures that they are always remembered by the community they left behind.
This is the power of local memorials. They keep alive the stories of ordinary young Australians who walked these same streets and paddocks before heading off to war. Some never to return.
To everyone in the community who continues to honour the sacrifices of our military veterans — Thank You.
LEST WE FORGET
