Meet Jared Gould, MTA WA Automotive Trainer and Accessor - from diagnostics specialist to industry educator, Jared brings over 15 years of hands-on automotive experience and a refreshingly honest perspective on career pathways.

After finishing Year 12, Jared followed the expected route towards university, but discovered his real passion through work experience in a mechanical workshop. What started as a curiosity about cars while supporting his studies became a full apprenticeship at First Class Automotives in 2007 - where he stayed for 12 years, becoming deeply hooked on diagnostic work and advanced automotive technologies.

Today, Jared plays a huge part in MTA WA's training programs, helping apprentices understand modern vehicle systems. Whether it's driveline technologies, drive assist functions, or the complexities of today's mechatronic vehicles, he brings a practical, no-nonsense approach to teaching.

"There's this dirty, dumb stereotype around automotive work that couldn't be further from the truth. When you realise it's engineering, diagnostics, and problem-solving, it completely changes how you see the career."

"I ultimately still achieved my original goal of working in mechatronics. That's what modern vehicles are. And now I get to help others discover that too."

Outside the workshop, Jared is a dedicated tech enthusiast - whether it's exploring the latest in automotive innovation or competing in FPV drone racing, where he's held the WA state title for four consecutive years and placed top 10 at the national level.

Apprentices who learn from Jared get something rare - a trainer who's genuinely invested in their success and still brings the same passion he had on day one.

🙌 Supporting WA’s automotive future at the Perth Tradie Expo!

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by Stand 42 at the Perth Tradie Expo at Ascot Racecourse from 12 - 14 June.

The MTA WA team had a fantastic few days connecting with current and future apprentices, trade professionals, business owners and industry partners about automotive career pathways, training, upskilling, membership and opportunities across the sector.

🔥Our Ignition Mission🔥

Our Auto IQ activation was a great way to put automotive knowledge to the test, with participants identifying 20 mystery car parts for the chance to win a major prize.

It was also a valuable opportunity for our team to speak with attendees about pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, EV training, upskilling options, trainer opportunities and how MTA WA can help keep careers and businesses moving.

Events like the Perth Tradie Expo are an important way for MTA WA to stay connected with industry, support workforce development and continue advocating for a strong, skilled and future-ready automotive sector in Western Australia.

Thank you to everyone who scanned the QR codes, asked questions or took the time to connect with our team. We look forward to following up with those who registered their interest.

Men’s Health Week 2026

This week is Men’s Health Week, and this year’s theme is simple: Reasons to see your GP.

There are 101 reasons to book an appointment. It might be something small you have been putting off, a check-up you know you are due for, a mental health concern, a question about fertility or sexual health, an ongoing issue, or a symptom that has changed recently.

Whether you are an apprentice, business owner, technician, trainer, manager or someone working behind the scenes in our industry, looking after your health should be normal - not something you only do when things get serious.

This Men’s Health Week, we’re encouraging men across the automotive industry to take one practical step for their health.

Book the appointment. Have the conversation. Check in with a mate. Don’t put it off.

🏆 Welcome to our New Member! 🏆

We’re proud to welcome Perth Truck Transmission Services, led by Ashley Purcell, to the MTA WA community. 👏

Ashley is a second-generation truck transmission specialist - with a passion that truly runs in the blood. Growing up around workshops in the UK, he developed a deep connection to the industry before bringing his expertise to Australia in 2006.

In 2017, Ashley established Perth Truck Transmission Services, now recognised as one of Western Australia’s trusted specialists in “On Highway” heavy vehicle transmission repair. 🚛🔧

Recently celebrating a move into larger premises, Ashley and his team continue to open their doors - not just to customers and suppliers, but to local students curious about automotive careers. 👨‍🔧👩‍🔧

While their niche work limits full apprenticeship opportunities, they are passionate about inspiring the next generation and providing valuable industry exposure.

⚡ However, like many in the sector, they’re feeling the impact of a growing skills shortage. With modern trucks becoming increasingly technology-driven, there’s a real opportunity for young people to step into this evolving trade.
Ashley believes collaboration is key - and together, as an industry, we can help attract and support future talent.

👉 MTA WA is currently seeking Heavy Diesel (HD) hosts for enthusiastic AES apprentices.

If you're interested in hosting an apprentice, we’d love to hear from you! 🚛✨
