Balaclava Shopping centre has the support of its community but are candidates listening? Justin Halliday wants a delay in any sale of the carparks to Coles to ensure we have it right. What are the views of other candidates. Look before you vote!

Carlisle Street, Balaclava was once a vibrant shopping street.

There are now 30 vacant shops. And key services provided by local traders have been lost in recent years as Coles and Woolworths grow ever more dominant.

Carlisle Street's future cannot be left simply to landlords and the retail giants.

Two months ago - on the eve of this election - City Of Port Phillip initiated the sale of key parcels of land - land that we all own - to Coles.

Over 120 people were fasinated to hear a series of well informed planners talk about how planning can move us forward to a better shopping experience in Carlisle Street. Justin Halliday made the final point- sell when we know what we want and have a water tight agreement.

Great contacts were made across the community- residents, traders and the traders association, property owners large and small. Friends of the Jewish faith gave up Jewish New Year to attend a meeting held in a small Baptist Church which expanded to hold this crowd.

The problems of security in the street were acknowledged but didn't dominate.

I thought there was love there- love of place, love of people and respect. HELEN

Balaclava Environment Streets and Trees has been an active as an informal group operating since 2019 to advance the causes of this area.
Best has made regular submissions to the City of Port Phillip Budget Process, promoted street improvements in the area including trees in Woodstock Street and Bothwell Street and initiated the Greenline along the Sandringham line.
Recent new boundary realignments have meant that it now includes part of Elwood and all of Ripponlea. The map is provided to inform those interested of all CoPP and the candidates standing in the forthcoming elections.
I aim to report on relevant issues and to facilitate fair discussion of a progressive agenda for the area
