With a High Fire Danger rating forecast across the East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Central Plateau and Western Districts tomorrow (Thursday), there’s a few things we can all do to stay safe.

🤔 Think carefully and be cautious if lighting a campfire or using machinery.

🔥 Check recent fires on your property, including fire pits and other outdoor fires, are fully extinguished. Soak it. Stir it. Soak it again.

🤝 Prepare your property and have a bushfire plan: https://bushfire.tas.gov.au/

📲 If you do see any signs of fire re-igniting such as smoke and flames, call Triple Zero (000).

➡️ Stay up-to-date with changing conditions in your area: https://www.fire.tas.gov.au/fire-danger-rating/

📓 Fire Permits are required across the state, to obtain a permit submit an application online at www.fire.tas.gov.au or free call

We’re a bit late 🙈 but we’d like to say a huge thank you to the people that donated the Lollies for the Santa run at Christmas time. There were many happy faces on Christmas Eve!

Huge thanks to Brighton's Best Bakehouse, the Bagdad Community Association and Jen Butler MP. We couldn’t have done it without you.🙂

Tasmania Fire Service would like to thank the Tasmanian community for their support during the Total Fire Ban and statewide permit suspension period.

Commissioner Jeremy Smith said community cooperation played an important role in reducing the risk of fires during a period of heightened fire danger.

“We are grateful to the Tasmanian community for acting responsibly during the Total Fire Ban and permit suspension period” Commissioner Smith said.

“Any fire that started in the forecast conditions would have been difficult to control and would have posed a significant risk to lives and property.”

“The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled the severe weather warning for damaging winds this afternoon, and while the Total Fire Ban and permit suspension were critical in reducing risk during heightened fire danger, the easing of conditions have provided some relief for communities and firefighters.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain prepared to respond to any incidents that may arise.”

Commissioner Smith said Tasmania Fire Service and our partner agencies are prepared to respond to fires across the landscape this fire season, and encourages every Tasmanian to review their bushfire plan.

“If you don’t have a plan, take the time to head to fire.tas.gov.au to prepare one to keep you and your loved ones safe.”

The Total Fire Ban remains in place until 2am, Sunday 11 January, and a Fire Permit Suspension remains in place statewide until 2am Monday 12 January with no new permits being issued during this time.

“As always, if you see smoke, flames, or anything that looks like a fire re-igniting, please don’t assume someone else has reported it. Call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Did you know? That the Fire Danger Rating is linked to the Fire Behaviour Index (FBI)?

On Saturday the forecast Fire Danger Rating for the Midlands district is High with a FBI of 48. This number directly corresponds to how fires behave and how we can fight them.

You’ll note on the image below that 48 is on the higher end of the “high” category.

With catastrophic conditions expected today in Victoria and elsewhere in the country it’s a sobering reminder to update your bushfire plans. Don’t forgot to include your animals!

Tasmania Fire Service has suspended the issuing of fire permits statewide as we prepare for high fire danger across the state this weekend.

From 2am today (Friday, 9 January) until 2am Monday 12 January:

‼️ No fire permits will be issued for burns during the period.
❌ Any fire permits already issued for fires during this period are cancelled as conditions will be unsafe for burning.
🔥 If you have burned in the last week, check your fire is fully extinguished.
🔥 Burns under 1 cubic metre which do not require a permit are strongly discouraged.
🔥 Anyone having a campfire and/or wood fire barbecue is urged to never leave it unattended.
‼️ Anyone operating equipment is urged to be vigilant to avoid any activity that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation during this suspension.

📲🚒 If you need emergency assistance, or you see fire or smoke in the landscape, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
