From Interest to Independence

Our NDIS participant, Sarah recently took part in an architectural photography session, where she explored her passion for photography using a DSLR camera. During the activity, she learned new techniques, experimented with different angles and perspectives, and captured some fantastic images of local buildings.

More importantly, Sarah built confidence, developed new skills, and enjoyed participating in her community while doing something she loves. She was proud of her photographs and is already looking forward to her next photography adventure.

At Western Sydney Community Centre, we support NDIS participants to explore their interests, build independence, develop life skills, and connect with their community through personalised supports and meaningful activities.

Whether your goal is to learn a new skill, make new friends, gain confidence, or become more independent, our team is here to help you achieve it.

Our Centre Services Manager, Amira Shahid, was recently featured in Isobella Halcrow’s article, “A Soft Point of Entry: What Comes Before Access to Care,” which highlights the important role community organisations play in supporting multicultural communities to access healthcare and support services.

The article explored how trust is often the first step before someone seeks help. For many people, language barriers, cultural differences, financial pressures, and unfamiliar systems can make navigating healthcare challenging.

Amira shared how Western Sydney Community Centre supports participants and families by providing interpreters, making referrals, and sometimes accompanying clients to appointments to ensure they receive the support they need.

Key takeaways from the article:
✔ Trust is essential in helping people access services
✔ Community organisations provide safe and familiar pathways to support
✔ Language and cultural barriers can prevent people from seeking help
✔ Personalised support helps people navigate complex systems with confidence

This work reflects the ongoing commitment at Western Sydney Community Centre to support, advocate for, and empower our diverse community.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on 19 May for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of Cancer Research.

It was wonderful to see our community come together for such an important cause. From the delicious homemade treats to the great conversations and sense of connection throughout the morning, the event was a fantastic success.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, donated, baked, volunteered, and supported the event in any way. Thanks to your generosity and community spirit, we raised an amazing $1,245 for Cancer Research!

Every dollar raised helps make a difference, and this achievement would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful community.

Thank you for helping us make a positive impact together.

It's Good to Know About Lung Cancer Screening.

On 9 June, we hosted an informative community health session, 'It's Good to Know About Lung Cancer Screening', presented by Hanaa Nosir from the Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative.

The session provided valuable information about the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, including who may be eligible, the benefits of screening, and the importance of early detection. The event focused on supporting multicultural communities and encouraging people aged 50–70 years to learn more about their lung health.

It was a great turnout with more than 60 community members from diverse cultural backgrounds who joined us for this important discussion.

A special thank you to our guest speaker, Hanaa, for sharing her knowledge, and to special guest Ilham Hafez, Director of the Arab World Network, who helped spread these important health messages through a live Facebook broadcast. Thank you again to Fateema Merhi, FM Photography, for capturing these lovely moments.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event such a success. Together, we can continue raising awareness, encouraging early detection, and supporting healthier communities.

We love seeing our participants discover and share their talents. Elijah, aged 65, has amazed us with his incredible drawing skills. Every artwork was created by Elijah himself reminding us that it's never too late to find a new passion or continue doing something you love. We are so proud of what he has achieved and look forward to seeing more of his amazing work.

At Western Sydney Community Centre, our NDIS services support participants to explore their interests, develop new skills, build confidence, and engage with their community. Stories like Elijah's highlight the importance of creating opportunities for people to discover their strengths and achieve their goals.
