G’day, meet Frank – our newest mate at the Ashmore Men’s Shed!

At a sprightly 81 and after a few health hiccups, Frank found it tough to keep travelling the country in his caravan with his partner, and he was starting to feel a bit cut off. He’d heard about the Men’s Shed through his brother and reckoned it might be just the ticket.

He got in touch and joined us a few weeks back. Since then, Frank’s been loving the yarn and the company. He’s taken to working with his hands like a duck to water and knocked up a cracking bird box to give the wild lorikeets in his garden a permanent spot.

We’ve noticed a real change – there’s a spring in his step and a sparkle in his eye – and his family’s noticed his new zest for life too.

Yesterday was the Ashmore Men's Shed's Monthly General meeting. Our guest speaker was Ben McDonald from Kieser Physiotherapy at Bundall who gave the members some great information on keeping fit and healthy. As always we had a Sausage Sizzle with Peter on the BBQ.

Recently, some of the guys visited a sawmill in the Northern Rivers area and secured some sections of Camphor Laurel timber at a very reasonable cost. Camphor Laurel is considered as an invasive species because it grows aggressively and has a massive root system. However it is a delight to woodworkers with its distinctive smell and beautifully intricate grain patterns.

Shed veteran Erik finished the planning, sanding and glueing on this piece to make a magnificent cutting board. The grain patterns have more twists and detail than most oil paintings and the finish is as smooth as glass.
