Parrots for Purpose

Parrots for Purpose We’re a Gold Coast based registered charity making a difference one bird at a time.

We come from a position of having experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety first hand. The remarkable and positive affect owning a parrot has achieved in the management and healing of associated symptoms is worth sharing. First and foremost, it is our pleasure and goal to connect as many PTSD, anxiety and depression sufferers as possible with a new friend (parrot)

at no cost to them. From experience comes a certain knowledge and with certain knowledge comes responsibility. What we do with that and how or if we use that knowledge is sometimes a risk worth taking. I’m proud, humbled and blessed to be positioned where I can engage with a myriad of different people for a common cause. This cause will work toward removing stigmas associated with mental health and arming recipients with tools (parrots) to help combat symptoms.

Hope we see you. 💙❤️🩵😊

Someone joined us today just to check and wish as well as we close the door on our first nest in preparation to open the door on a new one.

Massive shout out to all who assisted with the move, especially those who gave up multiple days and worked tirelessly.

See you all at our new Nest M2. 💙🩵❤️😊

It’s on again, can the ‘Baker’ crew improve from last place?
Can the Lions Club of Mudgeereba retain its title?
Will the Kozlov family return to the arena and test the opposition?
Rumour has it that Burleigh Heads Lions Club may register in an attempt to claim the title.

Regardless, it will be an amazing fun filled evening.

Hope to see you there.

Researcher Spotlight: Dr Lorraine Marshalsey

Animal Therapies Ltd is pleased to feature Dr Lorraine Marshalsey in our national Researcher Directory.

Dr Marshalsey’s research project, Birds of a Feather: Exploring parrots as companions in trauma recovery, is investigating the potential role of companion parrots in supporting adults living with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.

While dogs and horses feature prominently in animal-assisted services research, parrots remain largely absent from scholarly literature. This study aims to help address that gap by exploring people’s lived experiences, perceived psychological outcomes and the unique relationships that can develop between humans and parrots.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the research seeks to build an initial evidence base for larger studies, inform relationship-centred models of care, and contribute to understanding how parrots may offer an alternative when other animal species are unsuitable or inaccessible.

Importantly, the research also recognises animal welfare and the need to understand these relationships from a multispecies perspective.

We look forward to following Dr Marshalsey’s research and its contribution to a more inclusive understanding of the many species that may support human wellbeing and trauma recovery.
