Hey Anaiwan Mob! - Community Release Statement:

Nēwara Aboriginal Corporation is pleased to share the Nēwara Anaiwan / Nganyaywana Lexicon as a collated community record of words connected to the Anaiwan language, culture, Country, kinship, and daily life.

This lexicon is not being released as a final dictionary or fixed authority. It is a gathered record of words drawn from historical documents, archival material, language notes, ceremony resources, linguistic research, and community knowledge. Some words, spellings, meanings, pronunciations, or interpretations may be incomplete, uncertain, contested, or incorrect.

The purpose of this release is to begin a respectful process of community accepted, driven and led decision making around the Anaiwan Language. As Anaiwan people, families, Elders, knowledge holders, and community members, we need to work through the lexicon together so that the language can be rebuilt as a representation of the Anaiwan community as a collective.

Nēwara recognises that language recovery is not a simple or a singular process. Many records were written down by outsiders, often using inconsistent spelling systems, limited understanding, and incomplete cultural context. This is why decision-making around language needs to be done at a community level, and to allow the Anaiwan community to have the power to make decisions with language moving forward.
For this reason, the lexicon should be understood as a starting point, not an end point.

We have also been working hard with local families, who hold deep community and cultural roots as well as language understanding, with the plan of developing an Anaiwan Language Committee. Within this group, the appropriate processes will be engaged from the community regarding these decisions when it comes to Language Revitalisation.

If you would like to join the Anaiwan Language Committee, help nurture, strengthen, and provide valuable information forward regarding the revitalisation of the Anaiwan Language, please email: [email protected]

As stated, the Lexicon isn't establishing anything new; it has compiled all recorded information regarding the Anaiwan Language over the years. Whether what's compiled is correct or not isn't the discussion initially. From here, we want to work directly with the community to rebuild the language and allow the community to feel as though they have the relationships to make decisions based on our own language.
