In August the Earle Page College (UNE) Coast Run committee found out that Coast Run (from Armidale to Coffs Harbour) could not go ahead this year because of our inability to comply with COVID-19 requirements. In an attempt to live up to the Page culture of innovation and contribution to the community, Coast Run Goes Global was born. This is a magic way for our alumni and our the local community to connect and also to celebrate 40 years of Coast Run.
This has been an incredibly short planning window, and it is somewhat a miracle that an event has come together. EPC has had tremendous support from across the university and our local community, and now your help is needed. A goal of running 8,000 km for the week of September 14 to September 20. This represents the 200k each year for the 40 years. Making progress toward this goal will require the help of a considerable portion of our alumni. It will also be a tremendous opportunity to again connect with people from your era.
To get involved with this event will require a few steps ( I trust that you caught that clever pun).
1. Register to join the event by following the links https://www.unelife.com.au/epc-coast-run. This is also an opportunity to check out a few pictures from Coast Run over the years. Registration will require a $5 donation to CMRI when you register. You can register your whole family for $10 and have them share the experience with you.
2. Join the Strava Coast Run Goes Global Club. If you are not already a Strava member, it is free to join. Strava will look after all the record-keeping for the event and provide the updates to Leaderboards and total kilometres. Strava is a social network for athletes, where they can record their runs, and it goes into their feed so that it can be shared with other members of the club. If you want some help joining Strava ask as a reply to this or go to the Coast Run History Facebook group. You can download the app or join via searching for Strava on the net.
3. From Monday, September 13 to Sunday, September 20 clock up as many kilometres as you can. Record these kilometres on a GPS watch or on a smartphone, either directly into Strava or into an account that is linked to your Strava account. There will be instructions in the Strava Club and on the Coast Run History page, about the various ways you can do this.
There are also a few other things that you could do. Spread the word to alumni that you know and encourage them to get involved. If you haven’t already you can “like” the Coast Run History Facebook group and this will get you some updates and will be a suitable means of communication both ways. If you would like to get more involved in making this event a success. This could be through contacts that you have, committing some time to help with some behind the scenes activities. For instance, we would like to do some interviews of people about their life and their running. You may wish to volunteer as an interviewer or interviewee. You might be able to take a few hours to look after the social forum on Strava. If you can help out, leave a message on the Coast Run History Facebook group. There is also a few articles written about coast run alumni, and the links will be in the Facebook group.
Mostly we need your running and your enthusiasm. Help our EPC community come together and make a significant contribution and show that we care about college and about helping CMRI.
Doing it for the kids.
Earle Page College Cost Run fundraiser is its 41st consecutive year. Raising money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute, a significant part of the culture and the community at EPC, and within the University or New England and the community as a whole.
