Today, we commemorate Malaya and Borneo Veterans’ Day. We acknowledge all who served during the Malayan Emergency, Thai-Malay Border operations, and the Indonesian Confrontation.

Called up for National Service in 1965, Private Michael O'Dea was sent to Borneo as a reinforcement for the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR).

'I was assigned as a rifleman to 8 Section, 6 Platoon, B Company, which was at the forward company base [at] Stass, protecting the Stass Kampong [village] 2000 metres from the border with Indonesia. My section did patrols along the Gunong Raya [mountain] and around Stass base to the border of Indonesia.'

O'Dea served alongside Australian, British, New Zealand and other Commonwealth forces, including Gurkhas, in the Indonesian Confrontation.

Today, we honour all Australians who served during the Malayan Emergency, Thai-Malay Border operations, and the Indonesian Confrontation.

We pause to remember the 63 Australians who died in service of our nation during these conflicts.

We will remember them.

Visiting Sydney, highly recommend making time for a visit to the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.

The Memorial’s museum, located on the lower level, is well worth exploring. Its impressive collection includes military uniforms from different theatres of conflict, wartime photographs and videos, paintings, trench art, models, medals and personal correspondence from Australians who served.

The Anzac Memorial is open daily from 9am to 5pm and is definitely worth adding to your Sydney itinerary.

Vietnam Veterans' Day Memorial Service commemorated by Armidale National Service Association & Armidale RSL Sub-Branch

The 2026 observance also marked the momentous 60th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, which took place on August 18, 1966.

The day honors all 61,000 Australians who served, remembering the 521 who died on active service, the over 3,100 wounded, and the families and loved ones who supported them.

The anniversary of Victory in the Pacific! Today we commemorate the 81st Anniversary.
We pause to remember and respect the ANZACS who served their country for us, the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, the veterans who returned and were forever scarred, and the family, friends and mates who cared for them.

Armidale sub-Branch, Armidale Nasho’s, Hunter River Lancers and the Armidale Ex. Services Club will be holding a service to mark Vietnam Veterans' Day.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.
The Service will be held Tuesday 18 August at 11am Central Park Nasho’s Memorial followed by a short walk to the Memorial Fountain for the laying of the wreath.
All are welcome to attend the service upstairs at the Ex. Services Club at 5pm.
