The Learner Driver Mentor Program began in 2016. It is a community based program managed by Jobs Australia Enterprises that supports disadvantaged youth and young adults achieve their required Learner Logbook driving hours. The program provides supervised on-road driving practice with a volunteer mentor and access to a practice vehicle. Mentors may support the learners in logging some or all of the required practice hours. Participants also have access to the assistance of professional driving lessons with a qualified instructor as part of the L2P program.
We would like to call on the assistance of more volunteers and members of the community to be mentors. It costs nothing to become a mentor driver, we provide training, support and the vehicles!
If you have a spare hour on a particular day or a couple of hours a fortnight, we’d like to hear from you!
As part of the process to be a mentor driver, we conduct a police check, a working with children check (if you don’t already have one) and a traffic record check.
Over the last two years, the L2P program has helped over 27 learner drivers to gain their provisional license. We have had such tremendous interest and support from community partners such as Armidale Regional Council and UNE Armidale for the L2P Program. It is successful not only in our community but all across the region from Learners and other education and support services.
We are currently working towards expanding the program into other regions such as Tamworth, Inverell and Gunnedah
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer mentor, please contact Affrazia at Jobs Australia Enterprises in Armidale on 02 6776 0104.
