The ASVB is making social impact measurement accessible, affordable and achievable, to help make a difference in the lives of vulnerable Australians.

Most decisions about programs and investments still come down to cost. The question of whether people's lives actually improved gets acknowledged, but it rarely gets the same weight at the table.

Our Executive Officer Min Seto will be exploring how to change that in a free online seminar hosted by the Victorian Regional Network of the Australian Evaluation Society on 28 October, 12pm.

The session covers why wellbeing matters in decision-making, how evidence about changes in people's lives can be incorporated into Social Cost Benefit Analysis using Wellbeing Valuation, and how the ASVB makes it more accessible for smaller programs through a practical case study.

If you work in evaluation, social impact measurement, policy, funding, program design or delivery, and want wellbeing to carry real weight alongside financial considerations, this one is worth an hour of your time.

• A one-sentence description of the program and its activities
• Who participates and the approximate number of people involved
• The one to three most important changes you expect participants to experience
• Any evidence you already collect — surveys, attendance records, program records, feedback or observations
• The program’s frequency or duration

How do we decide where limited resources should go to create healthier cities?

We’re looking forward to exploring that question at AFHC 2026 in our workshop:
From Cost to Value: Building the Business Case for Healthy Cities Using Wellbeing Valuation

We’re getting better at measuring the health and wellbeing of our communities.

Population-level data can tell us where change is needed.

But when it comes to investment decisions, there is another question:
Which programs and interventions are actually creating better outcomes for people — and is the value they create greater than what they cost?

Costs are relatively easy to compare. Social benefits are much harder.

In our workshop, we’ll explore how wellbeing valuation and social cost-benefit analysis can help put very different outcomes onto a common basis, so that wellbeing can sit alongside cost when decisions are made.

We’ll look at how this can be used:
🔹 Before investment — to forecast potential social value, test assumptions and strengthen a business case
🔹 During delivery — to understand whether the expected outcomes are actually emerging
🔹 After delivery — to evaluate the value created, improve programs and inform future funding decisions
And importantly, we’ll put it into practice.

Participants will work through a real-world forecasting exercise using the Australian Social Value Bank, moving from program design and expected outcomes through to a social value forecast and the decisions that follow.

The aim isn’t to replace judgement, lived experience or population health evidence with a number.

It’s to make wellbeing more visible in the decisions about where we invest our limited resources.

Without evidence? No.

Congratulations to Enterprises, winner of the Jobs-Focused Social Enterprise of the Year Award at the Queensland Social Enterprise Awards.

ASVB has previously worked with Ability Enterprises, so we have seen firsthand the amazing work they do to support people into meaningful employment. This recognition is thoroughly deserved.

Congratulations also to every finalist and winner recognised on the night. Social enterprises are proving every day that strong businesses can create stronger communities, better jobs and real social value.

Thank you to Social Enterprise Council (QSEC) for including us in such an important celebration of the sector. Recognising and promoting social enterprises matters—because their contribution deserves to be understood, valued and supported.

As a social enterprise ourselves, ASVB was proud to be part of the evening. Thank you to our newly appointed Director, Andrews, for representing ASVB and presenting the award.

A social impact valuation should help someone make a decision — not just produce a large number.

An ASVB valuation can show four useful results:

• Total social value — the monetary value assigned to the wellbeing outcomes included in the valuation
• Investment — the full cost of delivering the program
• Net social benefit — social value after the investment is deducted
• Benefit-cost ratio — the social value created for each dollar invested

These results can support funding cases, tenders, board reporting and program decisions.

But the calculation is only as defensible as the information underneath it. You still need credible outcomes, beneficiary numbers, evidence, duration and costs.

Running 40 workshops is not the same as changing 40 lives.

Workshop numbers tell you what was delivered. Attendance tells you who turned up. Neither, by itself, tells you whether people experienced a meaningful change.

A credible social impact valuation follows a clear path:

1. Activity — what the program delivered
2. Outcome — what changed for participants
3. Evidence — who changed and how you know
4. Social value — the value of those outcomes considered alongside the investment

Skipping the middle steps produces a large claim, not a defensible result.

Purpose is not proof.

You may know your program changes lives. A funder, buyer or board will still ask:

• What changed?
• For whom?
• How do you know?
• What did it cost?
• How does the benefit compare with the investment?

A strong story creates interest. Evidence makes the case usable.

What do you do when you can't collect follow-up survey data?
It's a common challenge in impact measurement.

You know your program is creating change after the event, but follow-up surveys simply aren't practical, or create additional burden for participants, carers and support workers.
Does that mean you don't even try to measure the full impact of your program?
Not necessarily.

Our latest case study with Disability Sports Australia explores how a combination of available data, stakeholder insights and evidence-informed assumptions helped build a credible picture of overall social value when follow-up data wasn't available.

Sometimes the best impact story comes from making the most of the evidence you have, while being transparent about the assumptions you make.

Sport has always delivered benefits beyond the scoreboard.
Stronger communities. Better health. Increased confidence. Greater social connection.
The challenge has never been whether sport creates impact.
The challenge has been proving it.

A recent collaboration between and highlights an important shift in how we think about sport and recreation investment.

For years, sporting organisations have relied on participation numbers, attendance figures and anecdotal stories to demonstrate their value. While these metrics matter, they only tell part of the story.

What is the social value created when someone becomes more physically active?
How do we measure the wellbeing benefits of improved confidence, resilience and social connection?
What is the value of stronger communities built through local clubs, volunteers and sporting programs?

These are the questions funders, boards and decision-makers are increasingly asking.

That's why we're encouraged to see organisations like GippSport and VicHealth exploring ways to better understand and measure the broader outcomes created through sport.

At ASVB, we believe measuring social value helps organisations move beyond counting participation and start understanding the real outcomes participation creates.
Because sport isn't just an activity.
It's a catalyst for improved wellbeing, inclusion, confidence and community connection.

When we can measure these outcomes consistently and credibly, we can make stronger investment decisions, build a more compelling case for funding, and better understand where resources can create the greatest impact.
