Financial support is now available in the Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Uralla and Walcha LGAs with a Natural Disaster Declaration confirmed for the severe weather event that began on 31 July 2025.

✓ Primary producers:
Concessional loans up to $130,000
Transport subsidies up to $15,000

✓ Small business:
Concessional loans up to $130,000

✓ Not-for-profit organisations:
Concessional loans up to $25,000
Donated fodder transport subsidies

✓ Sporting and recreation clubs and associations
Concessional loans up to $10,000

Drought has been a prominent topic in the media recently, especially with the extremely dry conditions affecting southern parts of the state.

To help keep you informed, we’d like to clarify how drought is treated in NSW and outline the financial support currently available for farmers.

Unlike other natural disasters, such as storms, floods, or fires, drought is not officially 'declared'. This means it does not trigger support under the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements. As a result, drought assistance is provided through separate programs.

One such program is the Drought Ready and Resilient Fund, which offers low-interest loans to help farmers prepare for, manage, or recover from drought conditions.

⚠ CURRENT WEATHER UPDATE ⚠

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred made landfall over the southeast Queensland coastline on Saturday evening and is weakening as it moves further inland today.

Heavy rainfall is possible over parts of the Northern Rivers, Northern Tablelands and Mid North Coast today and extending into the Northwest Slopes and Plains Monday, before easing Monday afternoon.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible today about parts of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and eastern parts of the Northern Tablelands extending into the Northwest Slopes and Plains after midnight and throughout Monday morning.

Six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm are possible. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 100 and 150 mm are possible, reaching 150 to 200 mm about the border ranges.

Heavy rainfall is forecast to ease during Monday afternoon.

A Flood Watch and Flood Warnings are current for New South Wales.

Locations which may be affected include Armidale, Tenterfield, Tamworth, Gunnedah, Moree and Narrabri.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
