The Hangar

The Hangar The Hangar Mentoring is an aviation based charity. Is a PBI with DGR status

Young Australians with the talent and determination to pursue aviation are still being held back because the cost of getting started is out of reach. The Australian Charities and Not‑for‑profits Commission (ACNC) continues to highlight how education‑focused charities reduce financial barriers that would otherwise shut young people out of training pathways.
In aviation, those barriers are even more pronounced. Training, licensing and safety requirements create a pathway that is rewarding but financially heavy. We see the reality every day: financial support is one of the most effective ways to widen access to a safe, skilled and diverse future workforce.

At The Hangar Mentoring, we witness the difference a scholarship can make. It might be an endorsement, a type rating or mentoring that helps someone secure their first aviation job. When support arrives at the right moment, confidence grows. Possibility becomes something a young person can actively shape. As a registered charity, we help open doors to industry visibility that many would never otherwise experience.

Our scholarship round for this quarter has now closed. We expect the successful candidates to receive opportunities for UPRT scholarships, various endorsements (spin, tail wheel, etc.), start or continue towards a private or commercial licence. What stood out most was the calibre of applicants. Young people who are ambitious. Young people who are the first in their families to enter aviation. Young people who couldn't access this pathway without support.

This is why our work continues. And why awareness matters just as much as funding.

If you believe in building real pathways for young Australians in aviation, we invite you to share our work with your networks. Visibility helps the right young people find us. Support helps us continue to offer mentoring, connection, and scholarships that can change the course of a life.

Thank you for helping us make these opportunities visible.
And thank you to our partners and supporters who make this possible.

Highlighting Opportunity: First Nations Aviation Pathway Scholarship

At The Hangar Mentoring, we believe every young person deserves the chance to take flight. That’s why we are proud to announce our First Nations Aviation Pathway Scholarship, supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth aged 15–28 years in Queensland.

This scholarship provides up to $10,000 in funding for flight training and mentoring, with a strong focus on culturally connected pathways. It’s about more than financial support—it’s about opening doors, building confidence, and pathways for First Nations people.

We operate from Archerfield, on the traditional lands of the Yerongpan clan of the Turrbal people, and we honour this connection in everything we do.

👉 Applications are now open: www.thehangar.org.au

I invite my network to share this opportunity widely. Together, with our partners and communities, we can help young people soar.

Meet Andrew:

Andrew (who goes by Bou) is a current serving member of the Royal Australian Air Force. Joining the RAAF 21 years ago as an Aircraft Technician, he then commissioned as an Officer and completed his degree in Aeronautical Engineering. After a few years, Andrew was able to transfer from being an Engineer to become a Weapon Systems Officer and flew F/A18F Super Hornets, deploying to the Middle East with No.1 Squadron as well as participating in multiple high-end International Exercises, flying in Fighter Jets all over the world, including Northern Australia, Thailand and the USA.

While on a posting in a non-flying role, Andrew also completed his civilian pilot training, earning his Private Pilot’s Licence and then his Commercial Pilot’s Licence. Andrew has enjoyed learning new skills and sharing his views and passion.

Andrew is also a Martial Arts instructor, Fitness Coach and Business Owner. He enjoys teaching, mentoring, and helping people improve their lives by developing an understanding of their ‘why’ and paying forward the teachings he has received from a solid list of his own mentors. He has been a keen student of high-performance mindset concepts, and regularly writes and teaches others how to structure their habits, attitudes and mindset to improve their lives. Andrew finds practical examples and analogies to illustrate his teachings. He is always looking for ways to improve, learn, and pass on his knowledge through his articles, coaching, and open discussion.

The Hangar celebrates 8 Years of Mentoring, Aviation Pathways and Scholarships for young people.

Thank you for your Service Andrew and to your mentorship

I’m Jen, and I’ve almost twisted my neck way too many times trying to catch a glimpse of a plane passing overhead since I was young.

I always knew I wanted to become an airline pilot, but being the first in my family, I didn’t exactly know where to start and where to continue on the path.

This is where The Hangar has been invaluable as a source of industry connection, financial support and mentorship for myself and other mentees. Their initiative allowed me to build confidence and skills as a pilot by sponsoring a Spin Endorsement and connecting me with an amazing flight school down here in Melbourne when I was unsure where to continue my journey after completing my CPL.

I cannot stress enough how valuable it is (especially for those of us who are the first ones in their generation) to have a mentor in their corner who knows the industry, is always happy to give advice and genuinely cares for your development.

I am now one step closer to the right hand seat and making flying my living, and I feel confident and prepared thanks to the kindness and support of those around me.

The Hangar Mentoring is proud to support Jen, recipient of our Women in Aviation Scholarship.

From Mentee to Mentor

Meet Wil 👋

Wil first joined The Hangar Mentoring Program while still at school — excited to learn, grow and be mentored by leaders who shared valuable skills in confidence, leadership, and life.

“The program showed us what it’s like to be a leader, how to develop our skills, and how to build confidence. Those lessons have stayed with me ever since.”

Now, at 22, Wil has come full circle — returning as a mentor to support the next generation.

Outside of work, you’ll find him at the beach, spending time with friends and family, and staying active.
Professionally, Wil has completed his studies in Paramedicine and is now working as a Paramedic in NSW, helping countless people since May this year.

“Coming back as a mentor means I get to share not only my journey through The Hangar, but also the life and leadership skills I’ve built since — and connect with mentees who are where I once was.”

We’re so proud to welcome Wil back to The Hangar, this time as a mentor.
