Coconut Aelan (pronounced 'Islan') Crochet has its origins in Vanuatu - I love visiting and supporting the people and their handcrafts. My coconut planters are sourced from local farmers on Tanna Island and every purchase directly benefits local farmers. My crocheted plants came about due to my black thumb and the inability to keep any plant alive! My new glam fantasy plants add a dash of fun to owning a plant and are a great conversation piece and gift idea!

Have just finished a pretty crochet scarf, using wool from my recent travels - pink/purple possum wool from New Zealand, and white Icelandic sheep wool - both mixed with mulberry silk.

Evolution of how I make my coconut planters…
1. First choose from a selection of coconuts, sent all the way from Vanuatu, courtesy of the Tanna Farms Coconut Mill.
2. Next give a them a clean and dust off any excess fibers. Check for cracks and pore holes.
3. Give them a good sanding inside and out.
4. Once sanded smooth, clean and dust, then cover with a good quality, food-grade mineral oil and allow to soak in. This brings out their rich colour.
5. Finally, drill holes, add string and pop in a crocheted plant!

Another 2 ‘pots of colour’ to add to the collection for the club Mother’s Day markets in May. The dark pink rose is being donated to the raffle/auction for charity, so if you miss out on purchasing, you might just win one!
