Stick Mob, a collective of young First Nations comics creators/storytellers, are heading to Perth Comic Arts Festival this weekend: 27-28 July 2024!

One of the people behind the scenes of Stick Mob is the teacher who first noticed their passion for storytelling, who sought the resources needed to support their creative expression, and whose energy and support helped to bring their books and burgeoning creative careers to reality.

Wendy Cowan is an educator and artist-activist residing in Mparntwe–Alice Springs, Wendy has called the Northern Territory home for over two decades. Born in Enniscorthy (Inis Corthaidh), Ireland, Wendy left her homeland in her early 20s due to the sectarian war between Britain and Ireland, colloquially known as the 'Troubles'.

She has walked the Kokoda Trail and the Highlands of Papua New Guinea, worked in Jerusalem, Berlin (before the wall came down), a weaver in the Gaza Strip, and as a designer for an African dance company in North London.

Returning to Ireland in her late twenties, Wendy established an artist co-operative focused on socio-political arts projects during the lead-up to the Good Friday Peace Agreement. In Central Australia, Wendy has worked on numerous art-cultural-literacy projects, most recently as co-founder and Director of the storytelling collective, Stick Mob Studio.

Seraphina Newberry is the writer/artist of EXO DIMENSIONS. An Arrente woman, Seraphina grew up in a family of Pitjantjatjara artists and has lived in Alice Springs–Mparntwe all of her life. Painting since the age of five, her love of reading comics inspired her to create graphic novels in high school as an additional form of creative expression that she finds curiously relaxing.

EXO DIMENSIONS is a roller coaster ride into central Australian Indigenous creation stories, woven through family relationships, science-fiction tropes and sheer adventure. This story unsettles linear time as the past catches up with the future and vice versa, while the present reveals itself in intimate moments of connections, losses and mayhem...

“A bold, kinetic, dystopian sci-fi action frenzy, merging art styles reminiscent of Sweet Tooth’s Jeff Lemire, with a host of characters that look like they could go toe-to-toe with the X-Men, John McClane and Mad Max at the same time.”
-Tom Munro-Harrison, IndigenousX
