My beautiful Bredl’s Pythons or Centralian Carpet Pythons (Morelia bredli). These guys are one of my favourite species and I have 3 now. Toasty is my OG and only wife approved snake I have! (Better to ask for forgiveness than permission - I was allowed 1 pet snake 🐍 ), then there is the big guy Earl and more recently my little LuLu.
These beautiful snakes are one of the most striking reptiles found right in the heart of Australia. With its rich reddish-brown colouring and bold patterns, it blends perfectly into the rocky landscapes of the central Australian desert 🏜️.
As a species of carpet python they are of course, non-venomous and play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent and small mammal populations within their ranges.
They’re very strong constricting pythons using strength—not venom—to catch their prey.
They can grow up to 3 metres long, Earl is nearly that big at 15 years old, and are excellent climbers, often found in trees or rocky outcrops in the wild.
Like most pythons they are quite resilient and can go weeks or even months between meals, though Toasty acts like he’s never been fed in his life 🙄. They are also very heat tolerant.
Despite their intimidating appearance (Earl still freaks my wife out), they are generally shy and prefer to avoid human interaction in the wild. They’re very calm species that are great as pets.
But, if you’re in the red centre and you’re lucky enough to spot one in the wild, just give it space and admire from a distance.
