My beautiful Bredl’s Pythons or Centralian Carpet Pythons (Morelia bredli). These guys are one of my favourite species and I have 3 now. Toasty is my OG and only wife approved snake I have! (Better to ask for forgiveness than permission - I was allowed 1 pet snake 🐍 ), then there is the big guy Earl and more recently my little LuLu.

These beautiful snakes are one of the most striking reptiles found right in the heart of Australia. With its rich reddish-brown colouring and bold patterns, it blends perfectly into the rocky landscapes of the central Australian desert 🏜️.

As a species of carpet python they are of course, non-venomous and play a crucial role in the ecosystem by controlling rodent and small mammal populations within their ranges.

They’re very strong constricting pythons using strength—not venom—to catch their prey.

They can grow up to 3 metres long, Earl is nearly that big at 15 years old, and are excellent climbers, often found in trees or rocky outcrops in the wild.

Like most pythons they are quite resilient and can go weeks or even months between meals, though Toasty acts like he’s never been fed in his life 🙄. They are also very heat tolerant.

Despite their intimidating appearance (Earl still freaks my wife out), they are generally shy and prefer to avoid human interaction in the wild. They’re very calm species that are great as pets.

But, if you’re in the red centre and you’re lucky enough to spot one in the wild, just give it space and admire from a distance.

Last clutch of Coastal Carpet Pythons (Morelia Spilota variegata) for the 2025/26 snake season released back to Lake Manchester. Unfortunately mum to these babies was an accidental victim of land clearing. But her babies are her legacy.

Release of the last clutch in care over the Easter Weekend. 18 perfect little Coastal Carpet Pythons (Morelia Spilota variegata) released back to Lake Manchester. Aren’t they just adorable.

Snakes are in an active feeding time at the moment before brumation starts when the weather gets a bit cooler. So please be mindful. Slow down if you are driving. Wear shoes and pants if clearing your garden.

Was really starting to think I was going to go a full snake season without seeing one of these beautiful snakes. But then this beautiful little sub-adult Eastern Small-Eyed Snake (Cryptophis nigrescens) popped up in a garage in Kenmore. I love this species. Very reclusive and nocturnal this one was probably just looking for a warm spot to hide to shelter from the coming rains. Only about 30cm long, took a quick drink on a leave before disappearing back down creek bank.

Sometimes it is the smallest things that just make me so incredibly happy.

Earl is my 15 year old Centralian Carpet Python that was abandoned at a rental a couple of years ago that had spent his life with 1 piece of bark to hide under I an enclosure that was completely too small for him basically being ignored and fed “when they remembered” since taking him in, I have tried to give him a more appropriate sized enclosure, but anything bigger than his current 100 cm x 60cm x 60cm and he is completely stresses out.

The same can be said for any form of enrichment in his enclosure from natural substrate, any branches, ledges, or anything other than his hide box and water bowl and he would just force into one corner and he would be heavy breathing in the opposite corner.

Until TODAY, over the weekend I was given this big “Y” shaped branch that was sanitised and sealed and I placed 2/3 of the way up his enclosure. And to my surprise 😮 this afternoon he was up on it and asleep 😴

It just made me melt a little… to be able to give an animal that was treated so badly a simple joy like a natural branch to climb and nap on give me a special kinda joy 🥹

Good boy Earl. Glad you like your branch 🥰

PS please excuse the dirty glass. It has not been cleaned since feeding day last week.

This beautiful girl is still looking for her forever home.

Gypsy is a Coastal Carpet Python (Morelia Spilota Mcdowelli), she is a little enclosure defensive and has not been handled much. But with some work I’m sure she would develop the trust needed to be a great handling snake. She eats and sheds well and has been routinely preventatively treated for mites is mite free. She is approximately 6 years old and approximately the 2m mark in length.

If you think you could offer her a loving home please DM me for more details.

Just when you think we know everything about nature…

The unexpected findings in the savanna country of north Queensland have changed scientists' understanding of rock monitors, but there are concerns the new species could be vulnerable to the pet trade.

She may be tiny but she is mighty. This is the most recent edition here at my little zoo 😜

This is Trinity the South-west Spiny-tailed Gecko (Strophurus spinigerus spinigerus) she is my first gecko 🦎 and she has been a fascinating learning experience. I could honestly just watch her for hours.

She does love her food though and she can fight harder than her namesake. Having bitten off her much larger cousins tail off when they were housed together.

She will only get to approx 11cm from head to tail but those big golden eyes just make me melt.

Because I’m not only a snake guy but I am also an evil step-parent, here is my new series on parenting hacks for teenagers.

Is your teenager addicted to their computer or gaming setup? Do they spend what feels like their entire existence in front of a screen?

Well here’s a tip to get them outside and getting some fresh air and exercise. Just find a local Common Tree Snake (Dendrelaphis punctulatus) like this guy and let him live in the gaming centre!

But seriously this guy is harmless and was probably looking for a warm spot to escape the rain in Chapel Hill yesterday and thought the computer desk was the perfect spot.

Here’s a reason to check the top of boxes in your garage / storeroom before you just pull them down.

This Coastal Carpet Python (Morelia Spilota variegata), who is in blue (about to shed) was found just curled up asleep in a store room in Kenmore.
