Braille House is a charity that produces resources for children and adults who are blind or have low vision. Braille House began in 1897 as the Queensland Braille Writing Association by the then Governor's wife Lady Lamington (yep - the lady the Lamington is named after - but that's another story). Braille House's mission has not changed in 125 years "To provide Braille tuition and reading material to empower people who are blind or who have low vision to live with dignity and independence"

There is always something special about our Friday library dispatch.

Our iconic blue library bags are lined up and ready to begin their journey to readers right across Australia.

Lovingly packed by our dedicated volunteers, each bag is filled with something different – from new releases and much-loved classics to magazines and twin vision picture books.

Some are heading to little fingers exploring braille for the very first time. Others are destined for readers building their confidence and skills every day. And some are on their way to our longest-standing borrowers, whose love of reading has spanned decades.

Every bag tells a different story before the book is even opened.

By the time our friendly postie collects these bags, they'll be carrying more than books. They'll be carrying learning, independence, entertainment and connection.

Is one of this week's blue bags heading your way? What are you hoping the postie brings this week?

Today is World Day for Assistive Technology.

At Braille House, we're passionate about braille literacy and the many ways people access information, stories and learning.

From braille books arriving in homes across Australia to refreshable braille displays that provide instant access to digital content, technology continues to create new opportunities for people who are blind, deafblind and have low vision.

As a proud supporter of the ICEVI–WBU Global Braille Literacy Campaign, we recognise that braille and assistive technology are not competing solutions – together they help build literacy, confidence, independence and inclusion.

We're celebrating the technologies that help people read, learn, work and connect every day.

What piece of assistive technology couldn't you live without?

June is here and that means - winter is officially here and there’s no better time to cosy up with a good book and a cup of tea.

It also marks the approach of end of financial year.

For many not-for-profits in Australia, this is a time when people choose to make their final donations for the financial year, supporting the causes they care about most.

At Braille House, community support helps us continue creating braille books, tactile resources, and accessible learning opportunities for Australians who are blind or have low vision.

Braille is more than reading for people who are blind or have low vision. Braille is literacy, independence, and access.

As EOFY approaches, we’d be grateful if you would consider supporting Braille House with a donation. Every contribution - large or small - helps bring the world to their fingertips

A round of applause please for the South Australian Museum’s focus on accessible visitor experiences.

In its current Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition, tactile braille QR code indicators are supporting access to an audio described trail. Each described work includes a corresponding QR code with a NaviLens overlay and tactile braille indicator, helping visitors who are blind or have low vision independently locate and access exhibition content.

One of the featured works is “Tree line (diptych)” by Lisa Losada (South Australia), an oil and enamel paint on linen work, which is part of this thoughtfully designed exhibition experience.

These additions open up different ways of engaging with artworks and storytelling, creating richer access for more people.

At Braille House, we work with a range of museums and galleries like the South Australian Museum to support accessibility in practice, including braille production and tactile solutions such as braille QR code indicators for exhibitions and public spaces. If we can support your organisation’s accessibility journey, we’d love to hear from you.

Today marks the annual Gloucester Cheese Rolling race, where competitors run (or roll) 180 metres down a very steep hill to catch a wheel of Gloucester Double Cheese in the town of Brockworth, England.

The event is recorded as running back since well before 1826. In all that time, only one person has ever caught the cheese – an Australian competitor in 2013@

The event is also infamous for causing serious injuries almost every year. If you’d like a less dangerous, but equally creative challenge, the 105th Dickinson Memorial Literary Competition is open for creative writing submissions until the 18th of September.

Short stories can be submitted at an adult, junior student, or senior student level in three different categories, and a People’s Choice creative writing category is also open to sighted participants.

You can find all competition details at this link: https://www.braillehouse.org.au/education/dickinson-memorial-literary-competition

Recently, we held another Braille House Library Book Panel - a great session focused on strengthening our collection.

Led by librarian Brad, the panel reviewed a curated selection of proposed titles, informed by reader feedback, borrowing trends, volunteer insights, and wider publishing developments.

We had fantastic input from our recent reader survey, along with engaging discussion around current publishing trends and what they might mean for future additions to the library.

As always, we also considered production capacity and volunteer workload to ensure we continue to match reader demand with sustainable production.

We’re looking forward to sharing these new titles with our readers once they’ve been carefully produced into accessible formats by our volunteer and skilled production teams.

Thanks to everyone involved - a strong collaborative session as always.

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the incredible people who help keep Braille House running every single day. 💙

In 2025, the collective efforts of our volunteers and team helped produce 134,792 pages of braille and deliver 4,871 volumes of braille books, magazines and other tactile resources to people right across Australia.

For more than 129 years, Braille House has been powered by volunteers. Some volunteer in person alongside our team, while others contribute from home, quietly contributing. Every hour and minute matters, and every contribution helps create access, literacy, connection and independence for people who are blind or have low vision.

Without volunteers, we would simply have a library with no books.

To every person who gives their time, skills and care to this work: thank you. You truly help bring the world to people’s fingertips.
