BIRTH TIME - Reclaiming women’s birth rights! Our maternity system is broken. We have a postnatal depression epidemic, with su***de being the leading cause of maternal death in the developed world. Birth trauma is rampant. We have incredibly high intervention rates in birth, around the world, yet this is not leading to better outcomes for mothers and babies. We are losing connection from one of the most powerful, primal and pivotal things we will ever do in our lives. We live in a time where it is has become normal to disregard the importance of a woman’s experience of birth. Our birth and birthing experience largely impacts the way we navigate the world. Isn’t it time that women felt powerful and trusting around their bodies and the birthing process rather than afraid? Isn’t it time that we opened conversations and shared information that meant that women and their partners didn’t go into birth in the dark and full of fear? Isn’t it time that women were guided more confidently towards choosing natural birth as their first port of call? Whether they choose to birth at home or in a hospital. What would it mean if all women, regardless of their socioeconomic status, could choose to work in partnership with one midwife who provided them with continuity of care throughout their whole pregnancy, birth and postnatal period? And for the birth to take place in the venue of their choice and one that suited them and their individual circumstances. What would it take for women to emerge from their births feeling innately powerful, physically well and emotionally safe? Isn’t it time for women’s needs in birth to be heard! In practice, in politics, in funding and in policy. BIRTH TIME.

2027 is shaping up to be a magnificent year and we cannot wait to welcome the first group of student doulas into the Village to begin their journey towards becoming a doula.

Have you been dreaming of becoming a doula and wondering where to learn the skills of sitting with and supporting women at the alter of birth? Wanting to do face to face training instead of online?

We’ve got you. Launching early 2027, taught by Birth Time’s Jo Hunter and Jerusha Sutton, we will immerse in hands on training, in person at Birth Time: the Village in Annandale Sydney.

We are incredibly excited to bring this course to the community. If you’ve been wondering if doula work is the path for you- here is your sign!

Wow!! A decade ago TODAY we filmed our first interview for Birth Time: the documentary with Hannah Dahlen.
With by Zoe Naylor on sound with little four month old Beau in arms, JERUSHA SUTTON PHOTOGRAPHY 34 weeks pregnant on cameras, and Jo Hunter on interview duty, we grappled with new gear and interview questions, having very little idea of what we were doing!

Jo interviewed Hannah who of course did a superb job (some of you may of heard this story before) however when we went home to check out our footage we realised we’d recorded the sound completely wrong and Hannah sounded like she was recording from a toilet bowl! She graciously agreed to be interviewed again, and the rest is history.

It’s a good thing we didn’t know what lay ahead of us in the monumental task of making a documentary at that point- because we may have backed out!

To think where we’ve come in a decade, from a documentary that has won 24 international film awards, to helpinng kick off the BESt study with Western Sydney Uni and Dr. Hazel Keedle | Midwifery Researcher, to opening our own bricks and mortar Birth Time: the village in Sydney, where we can provide the type of care and curate services for women that we spoke about in our film… walking the talk… it’s been a big old time of constant, countless hours of work, but the four of us work solidly together and manage to get the things done.

We are proud of what we’ve achieved… and there’s plenty more to come.

Thank you to all of you who have joined us along for the ride- either from the beginning or if you’ve only found us recently. Your support means the world.

Our mission from the beginning was to work out how all women could emerge from their births physically well and emotionally safe… and we will keep striving to make that happen.

After such a beautiful gathering of PPMs with the NSW Chief Midwife a few weeks ago, Robyn Dempsey and Jo Hunter found themselves reminiscing about the monthly midwives’ ASIM group that Robyn used to run many moons ago.
It was a space for private midwives to come together for comradeship, support, connection, conversation and, of course, a good bit of banter.
So… we thought we’d throw the idea of starting a new one out there to our community.
And if no one turns up, Rob and Jo will catch up anyway 😂
But in all seriousness, we’d love to re-ignite a face-to-face monthly gathering for private midwives.
A space where everyone is welcome, everyone has a voice, and no one sits at the top of the table.
No hierarchy. No experts at the front of the room. No one person holding all the answers.
Just midwives coming together to share what they know, ask questions, swap stories, throw around ideas, troubleshoot the tricky stuff and celebrate the good stuff.
Whether you’re an experienced private midwife, new to private practice, an emerging PPM or somewhere in between, you have something to bring and something to gain.
The idea is simple: a community built by the community.
Come with an idea. Come with a question. Come with a story. Come with nothing but yourself.
Let’s see what we can create together. ❤️

2025 Matriarchs of Birth

Last year we sat at the feet of six of Australia’s most respected birth icons for the Matriarchs of Birth at Birth Time: the village.
In an intimate day of conversation, we heard about their incredible careers, their visions for the future, and absorbed heartfelt words of wisdom.
We believe that one of the most valuable things we can do as birth workers and birthing women, is to learn from these elders and their humbled insights, gained through a lifetime of dedication to sitting with women.

We cannot wait to host this years Birth Time: the Symposium on November 8th at The Village. We have a new line up of six legendary birth folk, including Dr Rachel Reed, Dr Andrew Bisits, Leona McGrath, Denise Love, Jane Hardwicke Collings and Jenny Blyth.

Join us. It’s going to be magnificent.

The second of our new permanent practitioners at The Village is Alex Dunwoodie.

Alex is a registered clinical counsellor, psychotherapist, and doula providing specialised support for women, children, and families.

Trained in IFS, complex trauma, interpersonal neurobiology, and neuro-affirming practice, Alex takes a compassionate, holistic, person-centred approach tailored to each individual’s unique story and needs.

After working casually from The Village over the past year, Alex is now permanently in Monday-Wednesday in the Dempsey room and we are so happy to have her.

FIRST AID FOR PARENTS

We’re pleased to confirm that St Johns Ambulance volunteers are coming along to our next client group.

A practical, confidence-building session designed to help you feel
more prepared, less panicked and better equipped to respond when your child needs you most.

This free monthly group is for the pregnant and up to 12 months postpartum clients, of any of the Birth Time Midwife Collective.

As usual we try to keep this group focused on women and babies. We kindly ask that older children stay home or are cared for by family.

Athena needs very little introduction to those who have been following us for some time- we interviewed Athena for the Birth Time Hub some years ago, she has run various workshops at The Village and has generally just been our go-to human for all things birth trauma counselling for some time…

Athena is a warm, down-to-earth counsellor and psychotherapist who provides compassionate, trauma-informed support for people navigating birth trauma, relationships, identity, burnout, grief, and life’s challenges.

Drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches, she creates a safe, inclusive space where healing begins with trust, authentic connection, and care tailored to each person’s unique journey.
