Have you noticed more Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring overhead lately? ๐Ÿ‘€
James Orton who leads Angair bird walks certainly has!

Over the past couple of months, James has been spotting more โ€œwe**iesโ€ around the Surf Coast, including three magnificent birds circling together during the April Angair bird walk at Lot 2, Aireys Inlet ๐ŸŒฟ

Curious to know if this was just a lucky run, James explored eBird data for the Surf Coast region ๐Ÿ“Š While the results werenโ€™t conclusive, the records show that since 2021, Wedge-tailed Eagles appear on around 5% of weekly bird lists โ€” sometimes even up to 15%!

Of course, with their huge wingspan and distinctive wedge-shaped tail, we**ies are one of the easier raptors to identify โœจ Other birds of prey such as Whistling Kites, Nankeen Kestrels and Black-shouldered Kites also feature regularly in local records.

Have you spotted a we**ie or any of the other birds of prey recently? ๐Ÿฆ…

Good plant sales produce growing space! ๐Ÿชด๐ŸŒฑ

Last monthโ€™s Members Day Plant Sale was an enormous success, with hundreds of plants finding new homes! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’š

Tracey Worsey, one of our skilled propagation managers, said the strong sales cleared a useful amount of space so our propagation teams can keep growing. A huge thank you to all our members and wonderful propagation volunteers who helped make the day such a success. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸŒผ

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a potentially dry winter, please remember to give your newly purchased seedlings continued extra care over the coming months to help them establish well. Let us know how your plants are doing. Tag us in on images, we'd love to hear from you.๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒฑ

โ™ป๏ธ The propagation team was also delighted that so many people returned their used forest tubes for recycling โ€” thank you! The only volunteers slightly less enthusiastic were those rostered onto tube washing duties ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿงฝ

You donโ€™t need to wait until the next sale to return tubes. Once your plants are in the ground, simply leave the used tubes in the cage near the Angair office door. ๐ŸŒฟโ™ป๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒธ May Orchid Highlight โ€“ Fringed Hare Orchid ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฟ

The beautiful Fringed Hare Orchid, Leporella fimbriata is once again delighting orchid lovers across the bushland. ๐Ÿ’œโœจ Its striking flower features a wide, ballerina-like labellum with delicate purple fringes surrounding a vivid green centre.

As the flower develops, colonies of ground-hugging red-veined leaves begin to appear beneath it. ๐Ÿƒ

One of the most fascinating parts of this orchidโ€™s story is its pollination. Tiny male Baby Bullants, Myrmecia urens are attracted by scent glands on the orchidโ€™s upright petals and unknowingly become pollinators. ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ’ซ Despite many searches, we have yet to spot these elusive little helpers ourselves!

Fortunately, photographer Rudie Kuiter captured an incredible image of a Baby Bullant pollinating a Fringed Hare Orchid at an unknown location (image 1).

๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒธ Whatโ€™s flowering in May? by Ellinor Campbell ๐ŸŒธ๐ŸŒฟ

May is a wonderful time to explore the bush and discover some of our beautiful local native flowers now coming into bloom. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿ’š

โค๏ธ Our local Correa, is at its peak, with elegant red tubular flowers tipped with curly green ends (image 1 by Margaret MacDonald), while Coast Correa (image 2 by Margaret MacDonald) displays lovely green blooms.

๐Ÿ’— Common Heath, Epacris impressa (image 3 by Neil Tucker) is putting on a spectacular show, with masses of flowers ranging from pale pink to bright pink and white. Did you know the pale-pink form, known as Pink Heath, is Victoriaโ€™s floral emblem? ๐ŸŒธโœจ

โค๏ธ Hidden among prickly mat-like foliage, the deep-red flowers of Cranberry Heath (image 4 by Margaret MacDonald) are beginning to emerge.

๐Ÿค Tiny white tubular flowers are also appearing on Prickly Cryptandra (image 5 by Ellinor Campbell) โ€” a closer look reveals intricate details best seen with a magnifier! ๐Ÿ”

Take some time this month to slow down, wander a bush track and enjoy the beauty of our local wildflowers. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‚

๐Ÿฆ…๐ŸŒฟ April Bird Walk Reportโ€“ Lot 2 & Distillery Creek ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฆ†

Despite threatening weather, eight keen birdwatchers enjoyed a wonderful morning exploring revegetated ๐ŸŒฑ Lot 2 and beautiful Distillery Creek on 11 April.

Highlights included:
โœจ Dusky Woodswallows perched along the creek (image 1: Margaret Lacey)
โœจ 3 majestic Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring overhead ๐Ÿฆ… (image 2: Rob Shepherd)
โœจ A Yellow-billed Spoonbill spotted high in a tree (image 3: Conrad White)
โœจ Flocks of Yellow-faced Honeyeaters and over 40 Wood Ducks ๐Ÿฆ†
โœจ Plenty of noisy Sulphur-crested Cockatoos filling the air!

The walk showcased how valuable revegetation and the Painkalac Creek habitat are for supporting local birdlife. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’š

A lovely morning tea at Distillery Creek finished off a great day of birdwatching and good company. โ˜•๐Ÿฐ

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’ช A huge effort by our Environmental Care Team last week, under the guidance of Peter Forster, tackling a thick infestation of Sallow Wattle along the northern boundaries of the Anglesea Golf Club land! ๐ŸŒฑ

In just โฑ๏ธ 1ยฝ hours, the team made an incredible difference โ€” opening up the area and reducing the spread of this invasive species. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ™Œ

But as every weeder knowsโ€ฆ thereโ€™s always more to do! ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿ˜… Several more sessions will be needed to fully clear the area, and weโ€™re hoping to get on top of it before the wattles begin scattering even more seed, with flowering season just around the corner. ๐ŸŒผโš ๏ธ

A massive thank you to everyone who came along and got stuck in. Every session helps protect and restore our precious local bushland for the future. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒ
