Rotary just earned a tribute on the floor of Federal Parliament, and we could not be prouder.
This week, Dr Monique Ryan MP, Federal Member for Kooyong, rose in the House of Representatives to celebrate the Rotary International District 9800 Changeover and the impact of our clubs across Melbourne and beyond. She paid tribute to outgoing Rotary District 9800 Governor Peter Shepheard and his "deputy" Michael Lapina and recognised three Rotarians who show Rotary at its very best:
- Robert McGuirk, whose leadership on the End Trachoma project helped Australia become the first to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem, a milestone decades in the making.
- Chris Wang OAM, whose Give Every Child a Future project united clubs across Melbourne, Sydney, Wellington and Auckland to deliver immunisation and cold chain support to nine Pacific nations alongside the World Health Organization.
- Kevin Love, who through the Victorian Police Mentoring projgram, facilitated the mentoring of more than 250 senior Victoria Police officers across 17 years.
Dr Ryan also celebrated Rotary's part in the near eradication of polio, our scholarships for young people, and the community projects that create lasting change.
In her words: "I recommend Rotary membership to anyone looking to make a genuine difference."
That is who we are. That is the magic of Rotary.
